Speaker 0 00:00:00 Good morning for McMurry wood Buffalo. You've tuned into the Mac city morning show. I am your host Elliot Pierre, and we're going to start, today's show off the same way we start every show off with a moment of gratitude. I know you could be doing a million other things with your time. So the fact that you're spending with us truly does mean the world to me on that note, Tanner hit him with the Speaker 1 00:00:20 Injury. Oh, she caught me loves when you're listening to the next every morning show. Speaker 0 00:00:30 All right. Okay. We got a, we got a good one today. My favorite type of guests, uh, I've never really met this lady before. So, uh, when I'm going to talk to her today, it's, I'm, I'm meeting her for first time. Just like how you are. So on that note, I think you're all aware. I don't introduce my guests because they can do a better job at, at them than myself. So on that note, can you please tell the people who you are and what your Speaker 2 00:00:51 Hi everyone? Um, my name is Jennifer Ivy and I own and operate and run the small local business, uh, and an end boutique. So we make children's clothing, adult, clothing, and accessories. Cool. Speaker 0 00:01:05 Okay. So N and N boutique? Yes. Okay. How long have you been up and operational for? Speaker 2 00:01:12 Um, so we're coming in on our third year. Speaker 0 00:01:14 Oh, fantastic. That's awesome. And so you actually can be found at the urban market here? Yes. Speaker 2 00:01:21 So in the summertime, I'm typically not there cause I have three children and they're out of school, so it makes it difficult to get to the markets, but from September to about may April, I'm usually there every weekend right Speaker 0 00:01:35 On. And so then during the summertime, how can people get in contact? Speaker 2 00:01:39 Um, so we have Facebook, Instagram, and then email or just simple phone call or text. Yeah. Lots of ways to get ahold of us. Um, generally I say the best way is either to text or message the Facebook page. Cause the three kids, I don't always answer my phone. That's right. It's pretty busy, but yeah, either of those two ways. Okay. So how did you get into this? Um, so, and then, then boutique. Um, originally started for my daughters. Um, my youngest, when she was about two or three years old, she really, really loved marijuana and I couldn't find anything anywhere for marijuana. Um, so I had some friends on Facebook who sell and stuff and I happened to see that they had fabric. And I said, where did you get that? And they told me, bought some fabric, made her sweater. And she said, I want more. Speaker 2 00:02:32 And so it just kind of went like that. She went off to preschool one day and her outfits and people started asking me, can you make some for my daughter or my son or my grandson or right. And so it slowly started like that. Um, and at the time being a stay-at-home mom, um, it also gave me something to do. Um, I started sewing younger, um, with my mom, obviously I learned a bit there and um, when my kids got older and started asking, I decided to pick it back up again and that's kind of where it started out. Speaker 0 00:03:06 Okay. Cool. Now to your mom and growing up, uh, we spoke a little bit before the show started. You did not, you didn't grow up here. You grew up somewhere else. Where where'd you come Speaker 2 00:03:15 From? So I grew up in new Brunswick and a small town called Sackville. So it's very, very small. It's about a couple hours, um, oh, down from Fredericton an hour and a half from Monkton. So yeah, it's the border town, one of the border towns between new Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Um, so we grew up in a farming community. We had a farm. Um, my parents worked really, really hard. Um, but mom always made stuff like she's she's so for a long time right now, the stuff we, so now is a lot different from what it was back then. But, um, she actually made my, um, uh, flower girl dress for her brother's wedding. And it's actually really cute. I w I should have brought a picture, but I didn't, but it was really cute. And so, um, growing up, I would watch her, so things here and there and she would show me how to do it. Speaker 2 00:04:12 And then once we moved to, uh, out here, she, she didn't have time to do it. Right. And I was a teenager. I was like, I don't. Okay. And then when I had kids, I went back to her and I was like, mom, you know, Natasha wants this. And she's like, well, let's go, let's go find fabric. And we originally started out shopping at fabric land, and we shopped a bit at Kathy's fiber arts here in town. Um, and we, we made stuff and then we just found more material online than we did in the shops. Right. Yeah. But growing up in new Brunswick, it was, it's a lot different than here. Speaker 0 00:04:51 Definitely, definitely a change of pace. I've had the pleasure of spending some time in new Brunswick in Moncton and Fredericton and Saint John's. Yeah. Um, yeah. It's, it's nice. It's Speaker 2 00:05:02 Quiet. It's more like, we love going down for vacations. And I always say to my husband, I'm like, I love going home for vacations. Cause it's just more laid back and it's more slower pace. You can just, you can relax, right? Yeah. Compared to like a vacation in port Macquarie still feels like you're working because it's like, go, go, go, go, go. Speaker 0 00:05:19 That's right. Yeah. I was surprised when I went to Fredericton, the Francophone community down there. There's like a lot of like, you take it for granted in regards to like living here. Um, you don't hear it that often. Um, and you assume like Quebec obviously is where they speak the majority of it. But yeah, my time in, uh, new Brunswick there Speaker 2 00:05:40 Is so, uh, in new Brunswick, it's actually mandatory to learn French. Oh really? So it's the only bilingual province left like that. They mandatory teach you French throughout school. Yeah. Yeah. So, and I mean, there's tons of settlements up Fredericton and pretty much all over new Brunswick where it's specifically French speaking people. Okay. Yeah. Speaker 0 00:06:03 So you took friends from kindergarten all the way to grade 12. Speaker 2 00:06:06 Yeah. So I didn't graduate down home and actually graduated. So from kindergarten, well, I don't think kindergarten probably like grade one. I think it starts right up to when we left. I left in, um, going into grade eight. So I took it from, from that part. But typically down there, I believe, I don't know if it's changed now since moving, but when I was going to school, it was from grade one to right up. Okay. Speaker 0 00:06:34 Cool. Did you retain any of that? Speaker 2 00:06:36 Very little. Like I could, I could probably tell you about the weather the days of the weeks and the months and my name and stuff. Um, to hold a fluid conversation would be a challenge to say the least. Yeah. Speaker 0 00:06:51 So when you came up to Fort McMurray, uh, you came up in grade eight. What schools did you attend? Speaker 2 00:06:55 We actually lived in Ontario for a year. So between grade eight and grade nine, we were in Ontario for a year. So I did grade eight there we came here my grade nine year. And so I attended and graduated from column Speaker 0 00:07:06 Competent high school. Hey Tanner. There you go. Speaker 2 00:07:10 Yeah. It's changed a lot though. It's got a facelift. Yeah. I went in, um, during their grand opening and I kind of did like a little walkthrough and I was like, oh my God, this is nothing. Like I went there so much. Speaker 0 00:07:25 The cool thing that comp has is that, um, multimedia space. I forget what it's called. We had Willie here. Do you know what that's the district I think is what it's called. I'm not sure the official name, but I know. Oh, it's amazing. There's like a, a studio in there, like a radio station and a performing art studio and recording studio in there and Speaker 2 00:07:45 Know they always had the radio station, like even when I went there, but it was very small and it was like up in like Speaker 0 00:07:51 The corner of the school and Speaker 3 00:07:53 It had no part in the school. It was, you saw the radio station van in the parking lot. And that was Speaker 2 00:07:59 It. That was, that was it. Like I knew it was there, but you never Speaker 0 00:08:02 Went to it. Yeah, no, it's cool. Comp has definitely changed and evolved over the Speaker 2 00:08:07 Oh yeah. And I mean, it's, it was a much needed facelift. Right. Cause it's, it's one of the older schools here I believe. Right. Yeah. It's, it's awesome. And it's great that they got it. Yeah. Speaker 0 00:08:17 Cool. So now you mentioned you have three Speaker 2 00:08:20 Children, three kids. Yeah. Wow. What are the ages of these children? Well, my son turns 11 this weekend. Um, my middle is nine and then my youngest turned seven in August Speaker 0 00:08:32 Seven, seven, nine and 11. Yeah. I got a busy house. Yeah. Speaker 2 00:08:36 Yeah. And we're going into full swing of preteen, everything with the older two. So it's, it's Speaker 0 00:08:43 Interesting. Now you mentioned you started this up because of the Disney movie. Love that movie. I've seen it once or twice. Myself. Yeah. Are your kids still into Disney movies at all? Speaker 2 00:08:54 Oh yeah. Yeah. They, they watch all of them. They're getting into the more live action. Like now that they're older, um, we watched, um, move on the new one that came out and they really enjoyed that. Um, they see that Cruella is coming out. They want to watch that one. So yeah. Emma Stone. Yeah. So we, they, they definitely, um, are into that kind of stuff. Um, they're more into the live action now, but they still love like the classics that my daughter loves. Um, my youngest loves Juana and beauty and the beast. So she's seen the original and then she seen the live action with, um, oh my goodness. What's her name? Remind me. Oh my gosh. I can't remember her name. Um, Speaker 0 00:09:44 Horrible with celebrity names. The fact that I throat Emma Stone is beyond me. Like I was surprised with myself Speaker 2 00:09:50 Anyway. She watched that one and she loved it too. So, and we actually, that was another one we endeavored to do is made her a bell inspired dress. Oh, there we go. Emma Watson. I couldn't remember her name. Speaker 0 00:10:06 Okay, cool. So they're still into the Disney style? Yeah. Yeah. Speaker 2 00:10:10 They're big in, on my son now. He's big in, on games. So, um, did you see the among us craze that went on just before Christmas? No. You're you're you have kids? My little guy's only six. Oh, okay. Speaker 0 00:10:24 Yeah. Well, listen, he he's very in tune to what's going on, but sometimes a lot of it just goes over my head. I'm an old man. Speaker 2 00:10:32 Yeah. I didn't know. I need to take a vote if my kids found it. And so this among us, it's like these little floating, they look like astronauts and they run around this ship and they have to do tasks. And one of them's, um, an imposter who kills. Um, and so everybody was wanting this and my kids were like, you need to find this fabric. So, and I found it and my God, I couldn't keep it. It was just gone every time my kids still haven't gotten anything made out of it. Like, are we going to ever get anything? And I was like, if I could keep it, Speaker 0 00:11:07 No, he's into a second Minecraft. Oh yeah. That's a big one. Minecraft. And then there's another one. I forgot what it's called. It has horrible graphics. You build like a world roadblocks. There we go. Speaker 2 00:11:22 I don't get it. Speaker 0 00:11:23 Like I can, I watch him play it. And it's interesting enough. But I just remember, like when I started playing video games, my first video game was an Atari for goodness sakes and then a Nintendo and Sega Genesis. And as these consoles were coming out, the graphics were getting better and better and more realistic. And that's kind of what the push was. So when he started playing this, I'm just like, what the heck? This is totally going back. Yeah. So I don't totally understand it. In regards to the graphics, the games are addictive and a lot of fun play. They're awesome. But the graphics are horrible. It's Speaker 2 00:11:56 Something about like rewinding everything like everything. Now I find with kids games and movies and something, they're always, they're doing like a reboot on these old games. Mario has been around forever and my kids still love Mario. And they, I still have the old game boy real game. And I gave it to my kids. Of course they couldn't figure out how to, like, it took them forever to figure out how to play it. Right. But they enjoyed it. It's awesome. And it's the old black await study colored. And my kids were like, this is awesome. And I was like, wow. I was like, when I was a kid, I was like, hoping for something. Speaker 0 00:12:34 Yeah. With him. Because he was into these games. I'm like, well, if you're into these, so I dusted off the super Nintendo and a and 64 and we plugged them into like, we have an old school, big screen television in the garage that you can still look everything into the back. And we put those on and he lost his mind. He's just like, this is the coolest, which for me, Hey, I don't want to buy the new PS, whatever five or two or whatever it's called or the X-Box. So I'm happy going retro with them. Speaker 2 00:13:01 For sure. Me too. Like when the kids ask them like, oh yeah, we can play this shirt. No problem. The only one that I found that didn't really go anywhere was GameCube. Right. Just like, that's it. I used to, I don't know what happened to it, but we had one growing up and you had like, they're like the tiny, tiny disk. And when I think back about like all how they've evolution, all of them I'm like GameCube never really Speaker 0 00:13:26 Stopped. I had a new system that didn't work there. There's a few of those systems Speaker 3 00:13:33 That the GameCube turned into the wheat. Speaker 0 00:13:35 Yeah. That's right. And then like, it was dream task. I think it was Sega. Yeah. I, yeah, it just didn't. The kids actually Speaker 2 00:13:43 Enjoy the we for the game cube because we had the game cube for a while and they played it, but they enjoyed the week. They, the only thing they have a hard time with is actually getting the sensor that's right. So they don't play it as much, which I think is a downfall. Speaker 0 00:13:56 That's right. I have the weed, but my little man, he'd rather go old school with the superintendent. Speaker 2 00:14:01 Whichever one is so much easier to you. That's awesome. Speaker 0 00:14:04 And I actually can play the game. So that's nice. So on that note though, I know we're at ticking along for time. Don't want to hijack Tanner segments called the Mac city minute. Okay. So is going to ask you a few questions. Okay. That's the luck. I have no idea what he's going to hit you with. So Tanner hit her with the Mac city minute Speaker 3 00:14:21 Question. Number one. What is your favorite piece of clothing to make? Speaker 2 00:14:27 That's a hard one. My favorite piece would probably be dresses. My they're like just fun, my most requested hoodies so I can make them in my sleep Speaker 3 00:14:40 Question. Number two. What is one thing people would be shocked you can make? Speaker 2 00:14:45 Um, I think people are pretty shocked about everything I can make, but I mean, the biggest thing is, um, Nintendo console packs. I just started making them. So they're like bags for your Nintendo switch. You can put them in, have slots for all your little games. Yeah. Speaker 3 00:15:03 Question number three. What is your favorite part of raising kids in Fort McMurray? Speaker 2 00:15:08 Ooh, that's a tough one. Um, that's hard. I mean, Fort McMurray has just become home. Um, I love the community. I love the schooling and I love how, um, my kids actually have my high school English teacher as their principal. That's cool. So, I mean, it's, it's it's awesome. Speaker 3 00:15:32 Question number four. What is your favorite classic movie to watch with your kids? Speaker 2 00:15:38 Oh, has to be beauty and the beast has to be. Speaker 3 00:15:42 And your final question, what is your favorite request? You've gotten, Speaker 2 00:15:48 Um, clothing wise. Um, I've got a lot of like, just anything Disney, anything to recreate, anything that requires Disney. Um, I've got so many interesting requests, but anything that incorporates Disney's is great. Speaker 3 00:16:07 And those have been your five questions. Yeah. Speaker 0 00:16:10 Oh, beauty and the beast. You're our guest. Speaker 2 00:16:12 Yes. It's gotta be the best movie to watch the kids. They all enjoy it. The cartoon. Yeah. Yeah. Speaker 0 00:16:18 I haven't watched the new one with the live act. Is it, is it good? Is it Speaker 2 00:16:24 Close? Oh yeah. Pretty much the same movie. Just live action. It's yeah. I mean, there's a few things they take out. So like, um, the fight between gas stall and the beast isn't as graphic as it would have been one in the animated version. Um, and then, but I mean, generally everything else is pretty much the same. I just found that was the biggest, Speaker 0 00:16:52 The biggest one. Okay. Yeah. I saw the lion king, the live action. That was good. That was very close to the original. Same with a Latin was close, but different. I enjoyed it. I am not going to say which one was better or worse. There was a clip actually we were talking about who's better Robert Robin Williams or will Smith is Jeannie, but these are the actions that they're doing. They're pretty cool. Speaker 2 00:17:16 Um, we watched a lot into and uh, yeah, they, he did a good job. Like everybody was worried that will Smith wouldn't do as well as Robin Williams. Yeah, of course. I think he honored him very well. Yeah. He did the genie justice. Speaker 0 00:17:32 Yeah. I agree. Like I was very Speaker 3 00:17:34 Skeptical, honoring and living up to our two names. Speaker 0 00:17:39 Yeah. Well I'm glad because Robin Williams was unbelievable. What I love will Smith. Yeah. So I was like, oh no. Am I going to like, will Smith less because of this? And uh, his recreation was good. He didn't try to imitate. So he did his own thing when to different lanes. So he did a good job. Yeah. It did a good job. You never know. Yeah. Speaker 2 00:17:58 And I find like, if actors are trying to like recreate, it's not as good as when they just take it over on their own Speaker 0 00:18:06 Adult movie. We'll talk about for a second, very different genre, but like Batman. Yeah. When I found out Heath ledger was playing the joker, I was just like, oh man, I felt bad for him because Jack Nicholson just like rock that role originally. And so he took it over and did such a good job, but a different, completely different, different characters. So. All right. Well that's it I from to the end of our time. So thank you for coming. Thank you. I really do appreciate it. Please feel free to come back as many times as you want. We only scratch the surface of like who you are and what your business is about. So anytime you want to come back, please feel free. You know where we are now. So just give us a shout, but before I let you go, shameless plug, please tell everybody at home one more time, who you are, who you are, what your business is about and how they can get in contact Speaker 2 00:18:52 With, okay. So I'm Jennifer Ivy. I run nnn boutique, uh, here in Fort McMurray. And you can find me on Facebook, Instagram, email, phone calls, and we make children's clothes, adult clothes, and accessories. And you can also catch us at the urban market from September to about may. Speaker 0 00:19:10 Here we go. Awesome. All right, well on that note for Macquarie that and Fort Macquarie wood, Buffalo, and the rest of the world, uh, that is the end of today's episode of the Mac city morning show. Thank you very much for tuning in. Really do appreciate. It means the world to me. And I hope you're having a nice day. Peace. Speaker 0 00:19:45 Talk about quenching your ugly thirst.
