Episode Transcript
Speaker 0 00:00:01 Good morning, Fort McMurray, wood, Buffalo, and the rest of the world. You've tuned in to the Mac city morning show. I am your host, Elliot Pierre, and we're going to start the show off the same way we start every episode off with a moment of gratitude. I know you could be doing a million other things with your time. So the fact that you're spending with us truly does mean the world to me on that note, Tanner hit him with the intro.
Speaker 1 00:00:23 Oh, she listening to the next <inaudible>
Speaker 0 00:00:32 All right. And we're back. I'm excited about this episode because we have a young gentlemen on the show that I can guarantee to you is smarter than me. So as you guys know, I don't introduce my guests because they can do that better than I can. So on that note, uh, young man, can you please tell the people at home who you are?
Speaker 2 00:00:50 Hello? My name is Brianna and I'm a grade six student for McMain Islamic school
Speaker 0 00:00:55 Go. And the reason you're here is because a, you want a spelling bee. Yeah. That's pretty sweet in your age category. So what was the age category that you were participating in? Nine to 12. Nine to 12? Yeah. Okay. And so how old are you? 10. 10. So you're not, you beat out a bunch of older kids too. Wow. So like I've only seen spelling bees on television I've never, ever participated in one, cause I'm a horrible speller. Um, how did, how does the competition work?
Speaker 2 00:01:26 So the competition works. Like they give you 400 words on a manual. So like you have to practice them. And in the first two rounds of the spelling bee competitions, you ask all those 400 words. If you get them correct. You're you're like still in the competition. It's like elimination. Like there's still people left in the competition. So like, if there's still people left in competition, then like they're gonna start doing a tiebreaker round on round three. So like they start asking words from the Oxford dictionary was very hard. Like you have to start practicing lots of words from the ultra dictionary for prepaying, for that. Yeah. Well,
Speaker 0 00:02:04 So initially, you know what, the 400 words are going to be, so it's like a memory it's like a, you memorize a 400, which is still absurd. I can't even imagine doing that. But then after those 400 words are gone, then it's random. So you got to read, like you said, that dictionary, you know? So in your competition, did you get, did, did it get to all the 400 words or
Speaker 2 00:02:29 They go all to the 400 words. They got all of them, but then there were like still a few people left, so it'd be started to do a tiebreaker round.
Speaker 0 00:02:39 Cool. Okay. Yeah. Oh, wow. And so how long does the, well, I guess if, how many people were left for those rounds and how long does that take?
Speaker 2 00:02:48 So like, there were like around 10 something people like over 10, like between 10 and 20 people, like there were still, there are a few people that got out and then there were like a few people left, like under the number 10. And then so like we started having another of ground and more people got off. Then we had like five people left. So like they started asking us words, like very hard words. And then, yeah. So like two people got out and then there were three people left. So it was me a boy and another girl. So like the girl, she got a word wrong, but she got third place. So she, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. So this kid, so he started to like do a word cycle with me, word cycles. So like, if you get a word wrong, then the other person has to spell it. Correct. And if they spell crab, then they get another word. And if they spell that crab, they declared.
Speaker 0 00:03:50 Oh, okay. All right. So the other young man got it wrong. And you spelled it? Yeah,
Speaker 2 00:03:56 We had many cycles offered, but like on one of the cycles he bought his word wrong. It was rhyme the word rhyme. And it was spelled R I M E. So like he spelled R Y yummy. And you got it out of the competition, but then it was my turn to spell that word crap. And then I said, R I M E so then I got my other word. It was Corpus and I spelled it correct. C O R P U S. And I was declared champion.
Speaker 0 00:04:22 Wow. I could not spell either one of
Speaker 3 00:04:24 Those words. I can not spell. I have trouble with my name.
Speaker 0 00:04:29 That's amazing. Those are like serious words, man. That's no joke. Wow. That's cool. So now that you've won the competition here in Fort McMurray, what happens now? Now I go to nationals. Okay. And so we're well, because of COVID, I'm assuming nationals, aren't like a destination, but where would nationals?
Speaker 2 00:04:49 Yeah, it would be held in Toronto. You wouldn't have to go there. And then they would have people from every province or region and then like they all will compete and then again, someone will be declared champion and will be national. Okay.
Speaker 0 00:05:03 And so after you, after you win nationals, is there something above that or? Yeah. International scripts. National would be the fleet compete against people globally. Yeah. Oh, wow. So how many people would be in the national competition that you're going into roughly?
Speaker 2 00:05:21 Um, I would say it was so like I'm in the junior category and there's only like one champion going from around regions. So I would say it would be something like, I don't really know how much it would be, but I would say that would be like a large amount, like around 50 people or something.
Speaker 0 00:05:42 So there's still some competitive. It wouldn't make
Speaker 2 00:05:44 Too much, like over a hundred or something. And are you guys starting
Speaker 0 00:05:47 Off with the same 400 set words before they go into tiebreaker break? Or is it a new 400?
Speaker 2 00:05:53 No, no, no. So like, they give you a manual. I have to practice it. I'm not, I for, I don't know how much numbers they are or like, but still even for that, you have to practice more words from doctrine. Yeah. So like, I not really sure if they give you a manual or not, because I didn't get mine. So it's either, you're going to be practicing more words from the Oxford dictionary. And then they're going to be asking you like random words. Like we're just going to have to spell it. Like you're not even going to be familiar with it or never use it. That's right. Yeah.
Speaker 0 00:06:24 So like I used to play basketball. And so when I played basketball, I had practice and you practice doing a jump shot or you practice doing a layup or you call your buddy over and you're like, yeah, I need to practice defense. Let's let's play one against one another. I've never had to practice for spelling. Um, how do you practice for like a spelling bee?
Speaker 2 00:06:45 Okay. So again, you have to practice the 400 words manual, and then after that you just have to like, try your best and finding like extra words. You have to like practice as many re whereas you can. So like, when I'm like, when I have free time, I watch movies and then I just look at the subtitles and just learn new words from there. I also check the Oxford dictionary. I also use other online resources for finding new words on your word list. Even I watch videos off other spelling bee competitions.
Speaker 0 00:07:21 Right, right. That's good. I like your you're not just cause I was wondering like, do you just sit down and read the dictionary because I'd get repetitive after a while, but that's cool. How you can like digest content through watching movies or looking at historical photos and videos.
Speaker 2 00:07:36 Yeah. Okay.
Speaker 0 00:07:38 When it comes to movies, what kind of movies do you like to watch?
Speaker 2 00:07:41 I like to watch, I like to wash a dime. I like to watch the emoji movie
Speaker 0 00:07:51 Emoji movie. That's a good movie. I like that one. That's a great one new one or old one. Okay. Have you seen the old one with Robin Williams? Maybe not. It's pretty good too. I just, uh, this weekend I went to watch the new space jam.
Speaker 2 00:08:07 Oh yeah. I'm going. I'm going to go watch that. So yeah.
Speaker 0 00:08:10 Nice. So after you won the spelling bee, like what kind of stuff, what did you do to celebrate? That's a big moment. That's a big deal. Yeah. So what happened after we,
Speaker 2 00:08:20 We bought a cake and like, we, uh, we bought some kind of things and then we went back home. We like started to celebrate on things and then we ate the cake. And then after that we went outside and like, we started, like, I bought a fishing rod and then we started to go fishing. Nice.
Speaker 0 00:08:40 That's a great way to celebrate kind of cake. Was it?
Speaker 2 00:08:43 The cake was, um, birthday cake. It was like the one with the S
Speaker 0 00:08:48 Okay. So I was wondering like chocolate or rainbow. There we go. Like a funfetti cake. Nice. Those are the best. I went to a birthday party. And although I'm a lot older than you. Um, I went to a birthday party for a buddy of mine and he had a funfetti cake, but he used Dunkaroos icing on the top. It was, yeah, it was the best cake I've ever had in my life. So outside of, um, preparing for spelling bees, what else do you do in your free time? Just to have fun.
Speaker 2 00:09:15 Yeah. I played basketball outside. I also sometimes go go to Mac island to swim. I also play video games and read books sometimes. Yeah.
Speaker 0 00:09:27 What kind of, uh, what kind of video games? What are you playing?
Speaker 2 00:09:30 I play both PS4, PlayStation four and a computer. I play on my computer that the roadblocks on my computer. And I played a Minecraft bro, holla and call of duty wars zone.
Speaker 0 00:09:43 My little Ivan boy. He's a Keegan. He's six. He loves roadblocks and Minecraft. Like I think if he can only do that for the rest of his life, he'd be a pretty happy kid. So he can do it. He can do it. That's right. And he started skateboarding recently with me, which I think is pretty cool. But uh, yeah, he loves those two video games. Now we have a segment on the show. We'll call the Mac city minute where Tanner asks five questions to our guests. So I don't know what he's going to ask you. So I wish you nothing but the best of luck, Tanner hidden with the Mac
Speaker 3 00:10:13 CD minute. Alrighty, question. Number one. What is your favorite word to spell?
Speaker 2 00:10:19 My favorite word to spell is super Calor. Frag. Allistic <inaudible> it's a word that means extraordinarily wonderful. Yeah. So like, and the spelling is S U P E R C a L I F R a G I L I S T I C E X, P I a I L I D O C I O U S. It's a brick color fry ballistic,
Speaker 0 00:10:46 Even though the sound of it is something quite atrocious. If you say it loud enough, you always sound put cautious supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.
Speaker 3 00:10:56 I feel like I, you could have just said whatever letters you wanted because I have no way
Speaker 0 00:11:01 We would. Yeah, we would have banked a hundred percent. Yeah. Great word. Great movie, Mary Paul.
Speaker 2 00:11:06 Yeah, its original meaning was a word to save and you have nothing to say, but now it's something else. Extraordinarily good.
Speaker 0 00:11:12 That's awesome. Nice word
Speaker 3 00:11:14 Question. Number two. What is your favorite part of spelling competitions?
Speaker 2 00:11:20 My favorite part of spelling competitions is learning new words because when you're learning new words, you can start using those words instead of the ones you like already learned. Like it's very, like, it's very interesting how, like there's so many words that can have the same meaning. Yeah. Yeah. It's a big, it's a big thing, man.
Speaker 3 00:11:43 Question number three. What was it like to win your age group? Spelling bee.
Speaker 2 00:11:50 I feel very happy and like accomplished because like I've tried, I worked so hard and like when I won the spelling bee, I felt like I was, I just felt like I'm because in the beginning of the spelling bee, I thought that I didn't practice enough. But then when I won, I was like very accomplished. Like I felt so happy. That's awesome, man.
Speaker 3 00:12:11 Question number four. How much time do you dedicate a day to becoming such a great speller?
Speaker 2 00:12:19 I spend, I would spend like a few hours every, each day. Just practicing words I'm in that would have free time. Even that time I would start practicing words, for example, in like how I said before I read books. So like I would check words in them. And then when I would like, uh, when I started to get curious about the word to like learn the definition or something, I would just search it up on Google and then I would learn that. And then maybe in the definition there will come up another word and I wouldn't know that, then I search up that word.
Speaker 3 00:12:50 Yeah. Cool. And your final question, how do you feel you will do at nationals?
Speaker 2 00:12:57 I feel when I do like good, because I'm going to be starting to practice even more and I'm now going to be starting to make my own list of foods, like more harder words, and then I'm just going to keep practicing them. And until I get all the words, correct. So like, um, I think that I will do good.
Speaker 3 00:13:17 And those have been your five questions,
Speaker 0 00:13:19 Practicing all these words must, um, help you in your other subject matter. Yes. Yeah. So overall I'd have to say you're a pretty, uh, solid student around I would. Is that a fair assessment? Yeah. Sure. Okay, cool. Now you're young. I got a young kid, we talked about video games. We talked a little bit about movies. I'd be remissed. If I didn't ask you about your food choices, what is your favorite food that your parents make for you at home and that your favorite food from a fast food restaurant?
Speaker 2 00:13:50 I like pasta and outside when I go to Mary bounds because I enjoyed the chicken there. I get a big Mary. Like I mostly get it on Mondays because they had got the huge deal there. Yeah. So, um, and I like pasta, so I don't really, I just like every type of pastor. Cause I just like the part where there's pasta. So like, yeah. Nice.
Speaker 0 00:14:16 He's the first one who said Mary Brown's here on the show? I think he is. You are. That's awesome. I, I sleep on Mary Browns. I forgot about them. I like fried chicken. You got like KFC Popeye's if you ever have the chance makes amazing fried chicken. You did. Oh, they make good chicken and then yeah, very bros is good. All right. Well dude, that's the end of the show. Short and sweet and say you killed it. You did great. Great. Thank you for coming. Um, thank you for winning the spelling bee for Fort Mac and your age category. That's pretty amazing. Buffalo proud. There we go. Now, before everybody leaves at the end of the show, everybody gets their shameless shout. So this is your, uh, part of the show where you can say hello or shout out anybody or promote anything you want. So it's all yours.
Speaker 2 00:15:00 I want to give a shout out to my family and teachers because I would never be here without their support. Yeah. So that's my shadow. Awesome.
Speaker 4 00:15:09 All right. Well Fort McMurry wood, Buffalo, this kid smarter than me, hopefully you
Speaker 0 00:15:14 Enjoyed today's episode. Uh, I love when we have young people on the show that are doing amazing things and this young gentlemen definitely falls into that category. So, uh, keep it up. My man. That's awesome. Everybody else have a great day and we'll see you tomorrow. Peace.
