Speaker 0 00:00:00 So count me in after that song comes on. Speaker 0 00:00:10 Okay. I guess we're going okay. Hello, Fort McMurray. How are you doing today? I am your host of the Mac city morning show Elliot, Pierre. Thanks for tuning in, uh, yeah, the response has been great. Yesterday. MOBAs was here, he murdered the show, so he set a pretty high bar. That being said, I'm sitting next to an stellar guests today, Tammy. Now, as you know yesterday, I'm not the best at introducing people, so I'll let her do that herself. But here we go, Tammy, say hello to the people at home. Tell them who you are and what you're all about. Speaker 2 00:00:43 Hi guys. Uh, Tammy Powell here with <inaudible> King. Um, yeah, I have a sports nutrition franchise here in town. Speaker 0 00:00:51 Sweet. And where's that located? It Speaker 2 00:00:53 Is located at 700 signal road. Yup. Uh, in thick wood next to the Blackhorse Speaker 0 00:00:59 That's a dark horse pub and Allie. The barbershop. Yeah, Speaker 2 00:01:05 My dear neighbor Speaker 0 00:01:06 Alley. Absolutely. He takes good care of me. So I got to give him a shout out to on a daily basis. Perfect. Yeah. So Tammy, I've known you for a while, but I don't know if everybody at home has had the pleasure to know you as long as I have, but first and foremost, let's talk about how long you've actually been in Fort McMurray. Speaker 2 00:01:23 Uh, I have been here 18 years. 18 years. Yeah, actually it'll be 19 this year. Yeah. In August. Yeah. Speaker 0 00:01:34 When you originally came out here, I know you didn't open supplement King. So what brought you out here and let's talk about all of the different positions and jobs that you've had over the years? Speaker 2 00:01:44 Um, well, I came and I was super, super young when I came just out of school. I'm not saying how old I was. Um, but you know, like everybody else, um, I came with my boyfriend at the time and, uh, that lasted six weeks. I was a complete disaster. Um, you know, um, then I came and I had my pilot's license at the time when I came, but I, it wasn't a field that I was planning to pursue at the very moment because I was still working on my multi IFR and as well, I had my class one. So, um, I came and I applied for a few jobs and I was here about four hours and I started working for a company called hatch associates. Okay. Yeah. So I was working as their secretary, Ashley, like me and I was like, yeah, sure. I can do this, but I had nothing to do with my career. Speaker 2 00:02:50 Right. So I did that for a while. And then I went back to school and I did my EMT and I, my tenant once tattoos for firefighting. And then I got a job with that. And I only did that for a couple months as we've had a major fatality in my family and we lost my brother. I still, I then things went on the back burner for a long time after that. And from there, gosh, this long time ago, thinking back to what I did with my career, um, from there, I went back to school again and took business and did that through Mount Royal university in Calvary. And then I decided I was going to work at site. I did work outside. Yeah. When I first started, I got honest and operator and I ran equipment for a few months. And then, um, they found out my other trades that I had. So I got onto the rescue team or started competing. And then I got into process at there as a process operator and they sent me to school. So that was really great. I was at Syncrude and crusade. Okay. Very cool. And then I was there for eight years. Speaker 2 00:04:20 Um, it, it was definitely good to me for sure. Um, helped me do a lot of education on the side, helped me open another holdings company that I had. Um, and then I went and had three children. Yeah. Three that's right. And while I was at Syncrude, I had decided that I was going to open up those sports, nutrition store. And once I had opened that I had opened in June of 2013. And then I left my position at Syncrude in October, 2013. Speaker 0 00:04:59 Right. So how long has it been since you've had Speaker 2 00:05:02 The store? Uh, it'll be eight years this year in June. Speaker 0 00:05:07 I know this. I don't know if everybody else does. However, you have one store in town, but there's more supplement Kings that you, uh, you own outside of the one here. Speaker 2 00:05:15 Yeah. I have four located in Edmonton right on, so yeah, one in the third, in every corner of Edmonton. Yeah. I'm one of the South end, open the East end one, the brewery district downtown. And then one up in the North end on 15th street. Speaker 0 00:05:32 Yo. And I've been to the one cause I spend a lot of time in Edmonton. Like most of our guests from time to time, there's the one like right off, uh, the, the white mud. Yeah. Speaker 2 00:05:41 Yes. Yeah. That's our South end one there next to LA fitness. Yeah. Yeah. Speaker 0 00:05:46 Location, Speaker 2 00:05:49 Location. It has a lot to do with it. Right, right. It can be amazing as you want, but if nobody can find you, yeah. It's just not going to work. That's it. Now Speaker 0 00:05:58 I'm going to put you a little bit on the spot. Cause you have a little party trick that I think is just amazing. And you giving me a hard time about it from time to time. I can barely say my alphabet. Uh, but because of your pilot's license, you know, the alphabet in a completely different way. That is where I, I just don't know how to say it. What's it called? How do you do it? And let's show the people at home. What, it's all about the phonetic alphabet and I had a golf event. That's right. You're going to ask me to say the alphabet backwards. No. No. Okay. So let's run through it because they're not going to believe you can do it. Cause I barely believe you can do it. Let's do the alphabet genetically start a day. Let's go to Z. Speaker 2 00:06:36 So you've got alpha Bravo, Charlie Delta, echo, Fox trot, golf hotel, India, Juliet, kilo Lima, Oscar Mike November comes after November, Oscar, Papa, Quebec, Romeo, Sierra, tango, uniform, Victor, uh, whiskey x-ray Yankee, Zulu. Speaker 0 00:07:07 Ooh, there you go. Very nice. Like yeah, every time I make a phone call, I'm talking and I have to give them a letter. Tammy just earns me and says, Ellie, do you need to learn this alphabet? And there's no way I'm going to learn it. Speaker 2 00:07:20 International language Elliot, you have to get on top of this. Speaker 0 00:07:24 True. But uh, I'm not a pilot, so I didn't go to school for the alphabet backwards. I cannot, I cannot. I'm not that talented. Barely can say it frontwards. So now I asked a mobile question yesterday, I'm going to ask you the same one in regards to Fort McMurray. Um, we're all local business owners, entrepreneurs here in town. Um, and obviously things are a little bit different now, a little bit because of their session a little bit because of the pandemic that we're dealing with as a local business owner in town. Um, what do you feel, uh, are the struggles that you're currently running into and what do you think are the, the outcome or the future of Fort McMurray for local businesses here? Speaker 2 00:08:07 Well, you know, we are doing good. Thank God. We are very, very lucky. We, you know, we're stealing that's customers. We have lots of support. People are more than ever. People have come to recognize that with the pandemic, looking after yourself and your health is number one, it must become a priority, you know, just stay healthy. And with that, it has really, you know, I think turn on some light bulbs for many people. So we are seeing lots of new faces, people coming in, wanting to look after themselves. And that's wonderful. Um, you know, for us, we do have the oral sense and you know, people will always have jobs and stuff. So I think we're quite lucky up here and blessed that people always have income coming and careers. So I think for Fort McMurray, we are going to be okay, we're always going to be okay. But you know, like you said, as an entrepreneur hope sees the invisible, right. And I'm very hopeful that we will continue to thrive and always be the thriving energy force for the country. Speaker 0 00:09:16 So 19 coming up to 19 years that you've lived in the community. Now you're from somewhere else. Let's talk about where you're from. And then I want to hear about why you decided to stay. Speaker 2 00:09:29 Hi, I'm actually from Labrador, uh, very North it's, you know, we're in the communities I grew up in goose Bay. My family is actually from the coast in Labrador. Um, we grew up where, you know, the food comes in in October on the boat and we don't get anything else fresh until may the following year. So, and then anything that does come flies in by plane and it was super, super expensive. So you didn't get any of your fruits or vegetables all winter. So you eat a lot of potatoes and um, yeah, it's totally different lifestyle. Um, what's really interesting is cell phones. We just got cell phones like in the last six months working there. Yeah, the coast. Yeah. Wow. Yeah. So you go there and it normally takes me about three days to adjust that, you know, I have no cell phone and the internet you like get on your Skidoo, going to one building where everybody parks get on that wifi. Uh, and um, yeah, it's, uh, it's different. Speaker 0 00:10:43 That's hilarious. That is different. No doubt. Most definitely. No, you sit on, you're a busy lady. You don't just own supplement King, numerous locations. You sit on some boards here in town. Now there's one that you're new to. So let me hear all about that one, because I've heard much about it, but I don't think everybody else has. Speaker 2 00:11:01 I currently just started with the Fort Murray golf course as a director with them. Yeah. So I just got on there, uh, in the fall when they had their AGM and a quite new it's a three-year term. And I'm really looking forward to, uh, working with them and meeting lots of new faces and hopefully make some great differences in strides with the golf course, as you know, with the flood that just happened last season. They've definitely had to overcome some serious challenges there, but they're doing it. And yeah, I think there's lots of great things to come. Speaker 0 00:11:33 No, in regards to golf, I'm more of a caddy than I am a golfer. But one question that I hear a lot is people bragging about their handicap. What is your handicap when it comes to golf? Speaker 2 00:11:44 Oh my goodness. Elliot, he cannot ask me stuff like that. So I only just started golfing last year, but it became like this insane obsession, like golfing every single day, like practicing for hours putting, I just could not get enough. And then I started YouTube and like a mad woman that I'm watching every single tournament that they have on TV. And I'm like, you've got to stop this. Like you've got to stop Tammy and yeah, it's only getting worse. That's hilarious. And then I got a Scotty Cameron putter. Oh my goodness. Wow. Oh, and my favorite golfers. Tommy Fleetwood. Okay. Speaker 0 00:12:26 Well one, I have no idea what kind of putter that is. So explain to me what that means. Speaker 2 00:12:31 Okay. That is the putter of all. Petters you're going to be like the golfer. You're getting a Scotty Cameron. Okay. Speaker 0 00:12:38 All right. So what is it about golf that like just has pulled you in so much? Cause I know you're a, you love Speaker 2 00:12:44 The gym. When I Speaker 0 00:12:46 Think about golf in the gym, these are two completely different. Speaker 2 00:12:51 I I'm, you know what, I'm not really sure what it is, but you know, when you hit that ball down the fairway and you've hit it, like, you know, you've had a nice bowl. It's just, it's amazing. I can't explain it. It's just, it's so good. Okay. Well Speaker 0 00:13:05 I'm golfing with you, but I'll just be the caddy I'll drive and you know, have a few beverages Speaker 2 00:13:10 That works for me. Speaker 0 00:13:12 Now there's one thing that I really want you to talk about. Cause I know you are a big supporter of hockey in this community for years and years and years, you volunteer your time. You don't need a lot of money, you sponsor a whole bunch of stuff. So let's talk about your involvement with the local hockey community over the years and what you're currently doing with them. Speaker 2 00:13:32 Well, unfortunately at this moment in time, there's not anything going on as they have. You know, it's on pause at the moment, I guess we'll say w which is really sad. You know, we have so much going on. We have other things open personally. I think we should be allowed to play hockey, but yeah, we must understand things are the way they are right now is as is. Uh, but yeah, I do sponsor a lot of different hockey teams with, um, in the community and to support these children. Um, I sponsor spring hockey are pretty involved in that as well. Um, yeah, just trying to keep these kids going. Speaker 0 00:14:14 No, that's one thing that I love about your sponsorship is you focus more on the youth, the youth and the adult leaks. Why do you think, why do you think it's important to sponsor the younger kids? More so than like the bigger leagues? Speaker 2 00:14:27 Um, well the children are our future, right? And um, if we don't help them advocate for them, where are they going? If we don't donate to them, what's going to happen. Right? Like they can't pay for it on their own. They need us. And, and as a mother, I just, I choose to give my, to his children. Speaker 0 00:14:52 There we go. All right. So we are coming to the part of the show called the Mac city minute. So what's going to happen now is Tanner is going to put you on the spot. He's going to ask you a number of rapid fire questions. You don't really have a lot of time to think about it. You just answer right off the bat. Are you ready for this? All right. The Mac city manager. Let's see Tammy. Let's see what you got. Speaker 3 00:15:14 All right. Let's do this. Our first question for you today, Tammy is what do you think the best way to unwind in Fort McMurray is Speaker 2 00:15:22 Go golfing. Speaker 3 00:15:24 Alrighty. And what do you, uh, what is one thing people don't know about your business? Speaker 2 00:15:30 Um, free delivery Speaker 3 00:15:35 When you're having a night in by yourself. What's your guilty pleasure? Speaker 2 00:15:40 Oh my goodness. Um, apples with peanut butter Speaker 3 00:15:49 In Fort, if not Fort McMurray, why would you, where would you want to live right now and why? Speaker 2 00:15:58 Um, goodness, what I'd want to live. Um, my dream is to live on a yacht anywhere in the world. Speaker 3 00:16:08 Right. And what does being a McMurry eight mean to you? Speaker 2 00:16:15 Uh, but I'm part of a community, a very tight community. There you go. Speaker 0 00:16:24 There you go. All right. Good job with the Mac city minute. It's a hard one. It's a hard one. You got to think. All right. So Tammy, thanks for coming by today. We're running to the end, but before we leave, I want you to plug your store. So let's hear where you're at. What's special about supplement King, how you can help people out. Let's just talk about supplement King. Speaker 2 00:16:48 Okay. Uh, so we are a sports nutrition franchise. Um, I find that a lot of people are intimidated. I hear that over and over. They're nervous about coming in. Um, please don't be nervous. We are here to help everyone. That is our goal. We want to help you find your goals, whatever it is, whether it's to lose weight, gain weight, you know, just live a healthier lifestyle. We're here for you. We want to do things, you know, to get into where you want to be. Uh, we catered to you people that have had bariatric surgery, uh, diabetics, um, you know, people come in and see us that yeah, they may have problems with joints. They may have insomnia. They're looking for things like we, we do a lot of things at the story. It's not just here somewhere that sells protein powder. Right? Absolutely. Yeah. Speaker 0 00:17:43 All right. So on that note, I think we're out of time. I want to thank everybody for tuning in today. Do appreciate the support. Uh, it's overwhelming, to be honest to you. So thank you everybody. Who's been watching live the prerecorded and the mini clips. I think we're at over 5,000 views right now, across all platforms. So thank you so much. Uh, let's keep that going. I want to thank Tammy Tammy fascia coming in. This is not going to be your last time. I can assure you that I will bully you to come back on the show more, but other than that in the morning, have a great day. Thanks for tuning in and we'll see you tomorrow. Peace.
