Speaker 0 00:00:00 Good morning, Fort McMurray, wood, Buffalo, and the rest of the world. You've tuned into the Mac city morning show. I am your host, Elliot Pierre, and we're going to start the show off the same way we start every show off with a moment of gratitude. I just want to take the time to thank everybody at home for tuning in and watching it. It truly does mean the world to me, because I know you could be doing a million other things with your time on that note. Tanner hit them with the intro. Speaker 1 00:00:24 Oh, she caught me, loves near listen to the next anymore. Speaker 0 00:00:33 All right. We got a barn burner today. I'm really excited about today's episode. I've known this gentleman for a long time, but he's passionate about the topic we're about to talk about. And we've actually never got into this topic, which blows my mind. So as everybody knows, I don't introduce my guests. I let them do that themselves because obviously they can do a better job at saying the name than I can. So on that note ask, sir, can you please introduce yourself and tell people who you are and Elliot, thanks for having me. I'm Peter Daley. I'm who I am born and raised in Fort McMurray like yourself, um, uh, father to husband, and, uh, that's about it. Okay. Now you are a huge fan of a certain sport though. Huge, huge fan of this sport. All right. What sport is that? It's wrestling. Elliot is rest. Speaker 0 00:01:21 Love wrestling. There we go. Town. Are you hitting him with the, uh, the belt? I got the belt. All right. You got your, your WWF belt in that's it that's the difference. There's a distinction. It used to be called the WWF. Yeah, but then the world wildlife foundation got upset. That's right. They had to change it, get it, get the F out. They called it. I like it. Yeah. So let's talk about that first and foremost, explain the history of it going from F T because it was F for not one or two years for decades, it went under the radar. So was this something that like the wildlife people were like complaining about for years? Or like, how did this all happen? They had some agreement. I believe what it was. There'll be somebody out there who knows more than more about this than me, but, uh, what it was, but yeah. You know? Yeah. Speaker 0 00:02:17 What it was was the, the WWF, the world wildlife foundation said, you guys can use the name WWF, but only in the United States. Oh, okay. And so then when the WWF started to expand globally, right. And they use the WWF name. Now the world wildlife foundation got upset about that. And, uh, they, they had to, had to Sue them I believe and get them to change the name. Okay. So what does the East end for it's entertainment? So world wrestling entertainment. Interesting. Yeah, it doesn't have the same room. I'm not going to lie. No, I know. Well, they went through a big thing. Uh, they had called it professional wrestling for a of years. Speaker 2 00:03:00 And then when they were trying to get away from, you know, there was people getting hurt with wrestling moves and all that. They're trying to distance themselves from the actual professional wrestler and put it as a sports entertainer. That's what you see nowadays. Yeah. Speaker 0 00:03:15 Okay. So let's talk about your introduction into wrestling. How did this start? Because you're, we're going to get into how big of a fan you are. Let's start at the beginning. How, and when did you first get into wrestling? Speaker 2 00:03:29 Uh, I first got into it with, uh, with my grandpa McDonald. Um, he used to love wrestling and he tape all the Saturday nights, main events. And, uh, so I used to watch those VHS tapes back in the day and, uh, watched them over and over. He got to see Hulk Hogan and Andre, the giant, and some of these huge, huge, larger than life personalities. So yeah, that really kind of catapulted it for me. Okay. Speaker 0 00:03:57 Yeah. So you're, you're a Hulkamania Hulkamaniacs Speaker 2 00:04:00 Through and through. Yeah, absolutely. I've seen some of your videos. They're all. Jeez. Hey, Speaker 0 00:04:05 They're like, you're hilarious with all cards. That's your dude. Speaker 2 00:04:09 That's my guy. He's the number one. I got the old whole Kogan shirt on. Yeah. Whole Kogan itchy. Ben, number one. Speaker 0 00:04:17 Yeah. So why Hulk Hogan is that just the first guy you saw? So he was your dude from day one or no? Speaker 2 00:04:23 Oh, it was a Randy Savage guy all the way up until after WrestleMania five. Yup. Yup. How do you go Speaker 0 00:04:31 From being a macho man? Randy Savage snapping into slim, Jim. Yeah, that's right. All the way to whole cogen. Like they're enemies. They are, Speaker 2 00:04:41 It had that crossover right where we were the mega powers. So I really, I think that's when I started to kind of catch on to whole Kogan though. Speaker 0 00:04:48 Yeah. Interesting. Yeah. Like I, I used to watch wrestling a lot when I was a kid. I think every kid does. Yeah. Male and female. Like you you're watching wrestling back in the day. You're doing the moves or definitely. So I remember there used to be a cartoon, like a WWF cartoon and Hulk Hogan was the guy that character Speaker 2 00:05:09 Cogans rock and wrestling Elliot. That's it. Speaker 0 00:05:12 That's the name of the cartoon guaranteed. So I used to be like, as a little boy, a big haul Kogan fan. Yeah. But then as the sport evolved and I started actually like watching it, not just the cartoon, I had to pick some different characters. Yeah. You know? So I got two characters. It was razor Ramon. Speaker 2 00:05:33 Oh yeah. Oh, I love God hall Speaker 0 00:05:37 Flicking the toothpick calling Chico then. And I can't believe this man's career has turned into what it is. The rock. Yeah. Yeah. The most electrifying entertainer. Yeah. Well number two, like who's number one. Oh, cool. Going. Okay. Okay. You're obviously going to say that. I thought you were going to, because of that air, I thought you're going to drop Steve Austin on me still. Speaker 2 00:06:00 So is there some big themes there? It's no, it's not, but yeah, I'm kidding. Yeah. It's always up to date, you know? Speaker 0 00:06:09 No Holocaust. That's just the letter. That's like me and Michael Jordan. Like who's the best, like J we're just talking Michael Jordan. Well, what about these other people? No. No. Why would we even talk about, you got to stick with your guy. Yeah. Okay. So you started watching it with your, your grandpa. You're watching the Betamax or the VHS tapes. That's right. And then you transitioned into, I have to assume you're watching it on like pay-per-views and stuff. Speaker 2 00:06:31 Yeah. We used to end up, I think we started, I don't know what grade it was. It was way back in the day. But we used to rent the box from Shaw cable. Right. And, uh, it would cost, I think, $20 or something. And then you'd have that box for the whole weekend. You could watch your, pay-per-view get some pizza, invite everybody over. That was the best. Speaker 0 00:06:52 And so is this something that obviously your grandfather like got you started? Is this something your parents were okay with and like, did they encourage you? Yeah. Speaker 2 00:07:00 They were great with it. They knew I loved it and collected. I still have all the figures at my house. Yeah. Like that whole set, the LGN set. Yeah. Still got those with the ring and everything. I got the ring unopened still in the box. Crazy. Yeah. Speaker 0 00:07:16 So, yeah, because I know a lot of parents Speaker 2 00:07:19 Band wrestle, that's it? Yeah. And Speaker 0 00:07:21 For good reasons, like, cause there's no way you watch it around never wrestled. There's no way you watch it and don't fight after. Speaker 2 00:07:30 Well, that's it. You've got to practice the moves then. That's right. That's terrible. So Speaker 0 00:07:35 When we're talking about wrestling, there was a transition that happened. You went from WWF, WWU whatever you want to call it. And then all of a sudden Mr. Turner started to leak. That's right. What were your thoughts about when that transition happened? Speaker 2 00:07:51 Bird watching WCW way back in the day before, before Hogan went in and all that. So I kind of followed all that up through and yeah, I loved it. Really loved it. The Monday night Wars loved WCW. I liked that they had some of those gimmick wrestlers or when to WCW, they had Savage Hogan, you know, they started to end w Oh yeah. It was just awesome. It was Speaker 0 00:08:19 Very different transition from like the, like, they definitely went a completely different way than WWF. It's right. And, uh, I think it was groundbreaking in regards to like, it helped the genre evolve to what it is now. Yeah. Where it really became a lot of, a lot more storytelling. Yup. Definitely. Definitely. And they were going for a darker edge. Yeah. I didn't like it at first. I gotta be honest. And this is why I'll tell you why, because I used to watch it before. W what was the, is Turner entertainment? Took it over, right? Speaker 2 00:08:54 Uh, WCW. Yeah. Before they took it over. It, it existed before that. Speaker 0 00:08:58 Yeah. And it was like super underground. Yeah. And it was like, it was real, like, as it was real. Oh yeah. It was like, great. Yeah. And so I left. So when it became a little bit more commercialized, Speaker 2 00:09:09 I was like, ah, it's not as real Speaker 0 00:09:11 Anymore. I, I appreciated the characters of my youth that they swung over. And I love the, how, like whole cogen went like bad. Yeah. That was neat. So neat. When he went back, Speaker 2 00:09:22 The only guy who revolutionized wrestling, I don't know how many times he's still doing it. No, he's, he's retired now. He's hosting WrestleMania coming up though. So he's doing a lot of those kinds of things for him. You're still involved. Still involved. Definitely. Yeah. Speaker 0 00:09:38 It's still Jack. I saw a picture. Hold on. YouTube still looks the same. It's amazing. That's what steroids do. Speaker 2 00:09:44 Well, I guess a couple of years there anyway, I can't verify. Speaker 0 00:09:48 You have to assume. Cause he's got to be in what is his late sixties? Seventies. Speaker 2 00:09:52 You know what? I don't even know how old he is right now. Speaker 0 00:09:54 Yeah. He's got to get begin up there. Crazy. Cause you got to S like I'm bad at math. I'm not even gonna try to do a 10 <inaudible> Hogan is 67 years old. 67 Speaker 2 00:10:04 Is on that already. Wasn't me. Yeah. As Speaker 0 00:10:06 Soon as we were talking 67. Yeah. He's looks great Speaker 2 00:10:09 For 60. So he does really. Speaker 0 00:10:11 So your kids, you have two young, Speaker 2 00:10:15 Do you mean young kids? Yeah. Are they interesting? They liked it. Like when they couldn't move yet, you know? And I had them, you know, I used to watch wrestling with them all the time. They liked it and I think they're sad. They're their favorite was Savage too. Right. But as it kind of evolves and they get older, they start having their own interests. They're not into wrestling anymore. Really. So you're doing it on your own now doing it on my own still. Okay. Yeah. And how old are your boys? Uh, seven and 11. Speaker 0 00:10:46 Oh, so you could get the seven year old back. Oh yeah. I could do it. I'm sure to have that. Some brainwashing there. I, uh, I just reopened, um, my super Nintendo for me and my little guy to play me Keegan. He's only six. Right. So we opened the super Nintendo and we put in old-school Royal rumble. Yes. Oh man. This thing has like Bret, the Hitman Hart, Shawn Michaels. Yokozuna razor, Ramon, the undertaker, like all the good ones. Oh, this is a good John Ruh. And he is like, enamored by this thing. Just loves it, loves it. And the theme music, when the guys come in and you can throw them over the edge and he's just like, dad, this is the coolest thing I ever saw. So one day I'm on my phone and I'm looking at the rock and he pokes his head over my shoulder. Speaker 0 00:11:33 And he's like, this guy's not in the video game, dad. I'm like, no, this guy came years afterwards. And so he's like, can I watch this? I'm like, okay. So he watches the rock and he sees the eyebrow. He sees the people, elbowed, you smell what? The rock is cooking. They eat it up to say he ate, eat it, ate it up is an understatement. Yeah. Like there isn't a day that goes by that he doesn't drop the people's elbow off. Oh, that's it on something. Yeah, that's right. I'm just sitting on the couch and all of a sudden there's just elbows. That's right. People's elbow. And he's just like, you smell of Keegan's cooking. <inaudible> from the top. That's great. Boys will be boys. That's it. So now you said there's a new, like something's coming up soon. Speaker 2 00:12:17 Well, I know WrestleMania is coming up. It's going to be a two night WrestleMania part, two parts. So Speaker 0 00:12:23 They do that. This is what I want to know. Like how, cause I haven't seen a WrestleMania for a decade. Speaker 2 00:12:28 Oh, okay. I got ya. Yeah. Well, they it's been different since uh COVID and all that stuff. Of course. So they just have, uh, like monitors all over the arena and then people join in that way. Um, but yeah, April 10th and 11th, they're going to have it. Okay. Um, so I mean, it should be good. Should be good, but I'm, I've been watching different wrestling these days too. Okay. What do you mean D E w what's the w E w all elite wrestling. Okay. It's run by. Uh, do you remember, uh, what was it? Cody Rhodes from WWE. So he owns it and runs it and they're getting all kinds of big names in there. Now they've got staying Taz is there, they've got, you know, some guys Christian cage, Christian, um, and uh, yeah, a bunch of wrestlers they've got there now. So they had Chris Jericho. Oh yeah. He's in there and it's, uh, it's really meat. Okay. Yeah. Cool. You'll have to check it out. Okay. Speaker 0 00:13:30 We'll have to check that out. Yeah. I'm like, it's, it's fun. The one thing that I, I, and I can't bash it cause I've never watched it, but the ads that I see now are all for the divas. Yeah. That's right. So the ladies really like have their own, I don't know if it's like a spinoff or whatnot, but when I see commercials, like, I, I can't tell you the last time I saw a wrestling commercial, but I'm constantly seeing this, the diva commercials. Right. So what's, that is what, or is it like behind the scenes of wrestling or? Speaker 2 00:14:00 Well, they, they started out, uh, you know, with, with women's wrestling kind of being what it was back in the day are good athletes. Yeah. Speaker 0 00:14:09 Well, Stephanie McMahon, well, even before to Diana and Robin Speaker 2 00:14:13 That's right? Yeah. Sherri, Martel, sensational, Sherri and stuff like that. So, but there was a, what they called the women's revolution in wrestling. Um, and you know, it started off by Trish Stratus and that kind of school of, of women. And it kept going, um, to the point now where they had, they've had a WrestleMania headline by a women's match really? And it's good wrestling. Yeah. It's really good wrestling. I enjoy watching it probably for the first time in history. Just as much as the men's wrestling. Wow. Yeah. There, Speaker 0 00:14:49 Yeah. I liked, I appreciated storyline of like the ladies being in there, like the whole Vince McMahon saga of his, like how he incorporated his family into the show. Speaker 2 00:15:03 That's right. Crazy. It must've been Speaker 0 00:15:05 Hard or fun. I don't know how that would be. I don't know. Like, well, I put myself out there a lot, so maybe they had fun doing it. He made a lot of money. Oh yeah. Did pretty good. Yeah. He's not in it anymore. He sold out. Right? Like when I say sold out, he sold not out, but sold the company. Speaker 2 00:15:23 I don't know that he did. I think he's still in there, but he's not on TV anymore. No. And uh, I think they're kind of handing the reins over to the Stephanie and triple H. She's still involved. Oh yeah. She's APIC. She got married. They got married. Real. Not just in the trail. That's right. Yeah. Paul Laveck and are they still together? Still together and they're, they're running the WWE and Shane's in there somewhere. Yeah. Speaker 0 00:15:52 Pretty neat. Like that's like, that's, that was the thing about wrestling that I enjoyed in regards to his soap. Opera. Speaker 2 00:16:01 Esque. Yeah. For sure. Definitely. Speaker 0 00:16:04 But it blurred the lines in regards to like, is this real or not real, like, you weren't really aware with some of the storylines. Right. Speaker 2 00:16:12 Especially during those Monday night Wars, you didn't know what they were going to say. Right. You know, and they could do anything. Yeah, Speaker 0 00:16:18 That's right. Like I, I remember not being of drinking age and watching stone cold, Steve Austin coming home with his beers, just crushing it one day, he just unloaded the whole tanker on the, I think it was the rock. And you're just like rocking the McMain going on here. It was insane. You never knew what you were going to tune out to. We had a guest on the show though, that said like, there was some kind of a contract that had been signed to like PG it up a while back though. Yeah. Speaker 2 00:16:45 They had different areas of wrestling and they called that when the PG year, uh, it was, they had gone from the golden era of wrestling with Hogan and Andre and the warrior and all them. And they moved into, you had talked about it before, uh, it was the attitude era. Right, right. And that was, they had all the, they didn't have superhero characters, like whole Kogan. They had antiheroes like Stephen Austin. Speaker 0 00:17:14 Right, right. Yeah. Uh, yeah. He kinda Speaker 2 00:17:17 Kinda came and took over. But then after that, they wanted to get back to a PG. Okay. So they stopped some of those. Speaker 0 00:17:23 Yeah. Yeah. That was my favorite era. I'm not going to lie. Which one? The attitude, era attitude here. Oh man. Well you look at who came out of that. Yeah. Like the rock so cold. Yeah. Unreal mankind. Mankind. Oh, he was, he was crazy cactus Jack. Oh my Lord. Okay. We're I know where we're going over. Spiraling. We're spiraling. I love it. This is what the show is about, but I don't to leave Tanner out of the Speaker 2 00:17:50 Mix. So Tanner has a segment called the Mac city minute. That's right. Tanner hit him with your questions. Speaker 3 00:17:55 Question number one. Who do you think is the most underrated wrestler of all time? Speaker 2 00:18:00 Oh, most underrated wrestler of all time. That's a hard one. That's a hard question. That's a tough one. There's a lot of, it's a tough one. Well, while you're thinking, I'll throw a name in there. Yeah. There you go. You got to say Shawn Michaels, Shawn Michaels. Like unfortunately the Hart family totally over Shawn, Shawn Michaels. But Shawn Michaels was like a great wrestler that just, there was so many personalities back there that he was great. Everybody knew who he was and stuff don't get me wrong. Like, but he never became like a forgotten God. Yeah, that's right. That's my Shawn Michaels. There's a few of those guys that never got to be like the guy, but were pretty big. You know, I like Carrie Von Eric. You remember the Texas tornado? Oh yeah. Like he was very underrated. He was huge. Huge down South. Yeah. You know, so I I'd say maybe a Carrie Von Eric. There we go. Speaker 3 00:19:01 Question number two. What do you take from wrestling that you use in your everyday life? Speaker 2 00:19:06 Promos got to cut promos all the time. Hey, Speaker 3 00:19:12 Question number three. What do you think? What is one thing that you think the modern era of wrestling does better than the past? Speaker 2 00:19:22 That's a hard one. I guess probably the easiest one. There is, uh, they're really good at, um, and involving the younger guys and like passing the torch, which is something that they, you know, the whole gins and those guys have been criticized about. Right. Um, so I'd say working with the younger talent, like I said, H w if you check this out, you should see some of the young, young, young up and comers. That's where they're all kind of learning their craft right now. So it's neat. Speaker 3 00:19:52 Cool. Question number four. What has been your favorite gimmick or storyline from wrestling? Speaker 2 00:19:57 Oh my God. Remember, like the Katie Vic storyline. That was horrible. I think probably the mega powers explode. That was my, my best rivalry. I liked that one. Yeah. Speaker 3 00:20:13 And your final question. What has been your favorite entrance song of any wrestler? Speaker 2 00:20:22 I think my favorite is Hollywood Hulk Hogan. When they, they took the Jimmy Hendrix tune there. Right. That was the best I loved that you hear that hit and then the new rule order, you know what I mean? They're awesome. There you go. Speaker 3 00:20:37 Yeah. And those have been your five questions, Speaker 2 00:20:40 So let's swing it for a second. We're talking about wrestling, but, uh, Vince McMahon did something outside of wrestling. That was pretty groundbreaking at the Speaker 0 00:20:48 Time. Talking about football. Yeah. That's right. XFL XFL. That's right. You know, that was a, that was a legit competitor. And I think twice they've tried to do that recently. Speaker 3 00:21:00 Did the other, starting it up again, like COVID has as pushed that back. Speaker 0 00:21:06 The one thing that, that league brought in talk about like a technology swing. They were the first league that had a camera on a wire moving back and forth that's right. So that view, that is iconic now. And we're all very accustomed to seeing it that was introduced during that football league. Speaker 3 00:21:24 Most, most techniques used in the NFL immediately after and almost to this day were because of the XFL Speaker 0 00:21:32 100%. Like that was the first league. Like I remember when it was going to, I was watching it a lot, like the one season. Yeah. The one season over the fel. Uh, yeah. Like no offense to CFL. I just, I've never like really got into it. Yeah. NFL does is better, but like that league, I was like, this league has legs and I think it actually kind of scared the NFL might've right. Huge, huge money. Yeah. Money. That's cool that they're trying to bring it back though. Tanner. Good, good reasons. Speaker 3 00:22:05 I'm full of useless information. Speaker 0 00:22:08 So let's talk about some old school wrestlers. There's one guy that I got to talk about. And what I want to talk about is transitioning with old school. So you have the rock who became literally the most highest paid actor. Everybody knows the rock now. That's right. Household name. But there was one guy I think that broke the mold and it was Andre, the giant. Oh my gosh. Have you ever seen the movie princess bride? Yes, absolutely. It's 10 out of 10. What a good movie. Yeah. He makes that movie definitely. And did you know that today? 34 years, 34, 34 years. Since the slam heard round the world, WrestleMania three whole Cogan slammed Andre. The giant really? That's right. That's crazy. That's time flies. Yeah. That WrestleMania, that match between those two men, I think is the most iconic wrestling match ever. When you think of wrestling, it doesn't matter how old you are. Speaker 0 00:23:05 Cause like we were, well, I, we both were super young, pretty young, but still we know about that. Cause we, they replayed it over and over again. And that is like, that's what you think about wrestling. Huge. I love it. Yeah. Do they still do cage matches? They still do cage matches, but they always call them Helen and sell matches. Okay. So the cage goes all around. Okay. Closes in. But I'm a fan of that. You remember the big blue bars. That's that was my jam. I liked that it was straight up dangerous because the first cage match, I think like think our, if and correct me if I'm wrong, but they never used to have the roof. That's right. There was no roof on it. And they used to throw guys right out of the ring and that thing was like 20 feet, high, crazy 15 feet. There was Jimmy snuck. He used to jump off of that onto people. Yeah. Speaker 3 00:23:55 Did you guys ever watch the now defunct wrestling? Uh, TNA. Oh, no. TNA is still going. Oh, it is. Yeah. Speaker 0 00:24:02 Uh, impact wrestling. I don't know what it's going on, but they're actually doing a crossover with AEW right now Speaker 3 00:24:09 For, for a little bit there. They had huge names. Hulk Hogan was a part of it. And Nick Foley was a part of it and it was a bloody was show. Like I watched it and it was like, just as bloody as like any of the old wrestling, throwing guys on nails, throwing guys through glass, like cutting people, suicides. Speaker 0 00:24:28 They just had a, what was it? A barbed wire baseball then mine match or something. Speaker 3 00:24:34 Yeah. They were, they put barbed wire on the bottom of the ring and they throw guys into it. Um, who is on there? He's on WWE. Now he wore the mask, the abyss Bess used to come out with like a baseball bat with barbed wire tied around it and actually hit dudes with it. It was intense. Speaker 0 00:24:54 That's nuts. I mean, that was like when mankind came into the league, that's my thing. Speaker 3 00:25:01 Or Nick Foley, Nick Foley was also very, very bloody and bruised. Speaker 0 00:25:06 Yeah, absolutely. Like you said, the attitude era, because before that you had like, like you said, Hulk, Hogan, Jake, the snake that's right. Like Rick flair, like it wasn't yeah. It wasn't what it was. And then that, that, I don't know. 10 year period. Yeah. It got, it got really violent. Yeah. And really awesome. Definitely creatively. It was pretty neat. That's what I mean. Yeah. Yeah. Speaker 3 00:25:30 But all that TNA stuff happened after the attitude, era of WWE had ended. Like I was, I never witnessed attitude area, but, but I witnessed like TNA, like guys coming out and beat and dudes like, and not even on the, pay-per-views just like on the Friday night free shows. Yeah. Speaker 0 00:25:47 And TV has changed so much, like, because, and that's why it's hard to like now I don't watch it anymore because it's not, it's not the channel. It's not the same. You're not tuning in on Monday. It's Friday or like whenever it's happening. Right. Like I think, although the world has become way more accessible. Yeah. On another plane, like for wrestling, it's a little bit harder. You got to find it. That's what you're looking for. It definitely. But no doubt. It's out there. If you start YouTube out there, I'm, I've gotten away a little bit from, from, it's just, it's not the same without the guys that I loved watching on there. So I've kind of, I got to that place where I'm watching a w right now is amazing. Yeah. But I'll still catch up with the, uh, the pay-per-views and Wrestlemania's and summer slams and all that. Speaker 0 00:26:34 So for slabs. Oh my goodness. So many good memories of like, like you said, getting the little box from Shaw, getting all your boys together, pizza and just like setting up the ring afterwards. I get to give a shout out to let's give a shout out to Alieve from thick wood barber shop by black horse. I just went in there this morning. Those guys are talented group individuals. Here we go.
