Speaker 0 00:00:00 Good morning, Fort McMurray, wood, Buffalo, and the rest of the world. You've tuned into the Mac city morning show. I am your host, Elliot Pierre. And as per usual, we're going to start the show off the same way we start every show off with a moment of gratitude. I know you could be doing a million things with your time, and the fact that you choose to spend with us truly does mean the world to me. So thank you on that note, Tanner hit him with the intro.
Speaker 0 00:00:29 All right. And we're back. Well, as you can see, I'm not on the set of the Mac city morning show. I happened to be at holy Trinity high school. I'm interviewing some pretty amazing people today and I have one sitting next to me. Now I do not introduce my guests, as you all know. So on that note, can you please tell everybody at home who you are and what you're about?
Speaker 2 00:00:46 Yeah. Um, so my name is summer Randall. I'm a grade 11 student at holy Trinity. I've been going here since the very beginning in grade seven. And I've been in the dance program since grade seven,
Speaker 0 00:00:56 Since grade seven. Wow. How was that like with the bigger kids?
Speaker 2 00:01:01 Um, while we in grade seven, we just got our own classes. And so like the only time we were with the older ones were during showtimes and back then we actually got to do the shows, you know, live and in person. Right. So, um, but they're always so welcoming. So I felt at home anyways. Okay.
Speaker 0 00:01:16 So did you pick holy Trinity because it had a dancing program? Yeah.
Speaker 2 00:01:20 Yeah. So I've been dancing since I was like eight or nine years old. I started at Kiano and then I was in uptown and then I came here in grade seven and I've been just dancing here since,
Speaker 0 00:01:31 So are you from Fort McMurray originally or I'm
Speaker 2 00:01:33 Not I'm from Newfoundland. Yeah. I moved here at the age of six and yeah. And I didn't dance in Newfoundland. I just, you know, kind of figured it out when I moved here and I thought that was really cool.
Speaker 0 00:01:45 No doubt. What part of new fluid,
Speaker 2 00:01:47 Um, Northern
Speaker 0 00:01:48 Peninsula, you don't have an accent at all now.
Speaker 2 00:01:52 I've been here for so long ago and says I have an accident. Yeah.
Speaker 0 00:01:55 Worn off. I would've never have guessed that you were from the east coast. Okay. So yeah, you came to Trinity figure, there was a dance program here, and this is what it was about. How did you hear about the dance program? It was like somebody in, um, elementary school. How, when you're deciding, how did you hear about it for other people who may be in,
Speaker 2 00:02:12 Right. So I was already dancing here as like the uptown program. Yeah. So I always seen the kids that were students here already coming into the dance classes when I would be here and stuff like that. And I had friends who were already in school who were a bit older, perhaps they were already dancing here. Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 0 00:02:31 Yeah. And so I talked to a teacher a little bit before you came here. So I found out a little bit about the programs. So when you initially came here, like what has been your kind of transit, not transition, but your kind of path when it comes to dancing from grade seven to now.
Speaker 2 00:02:49 So in grade seven, I just did it as an option. Right. Um, so that was just like one block in my day that I would just be dancing. And then in grade eight I started the academy, which was in the, at that time. So I would come before school even started and dance for a couple hours before school. Yeah. So, yeah. So, um, once I was allowed to do academy in grade eight, I was in it every, since.
Speaker 0 00:03:12 Okay. Now I know a little bit about dancing, cause I hadn't liked my little sister and girls that I dated back in the day used to be in dancing. Um, and they used to be in like academies, like you were saying in regards to like uptown. Um, is that something that is still like, I know it still takes place, but when you join a school like this and you're part of the academy and you also like dance throughout enduring, do you take additional dancing as well? Or is it just all in?
Speaker 2 00:03:37 Yeah, so, um, I took out of school dance to until around grade nine and then I was dancing so much in school, you know, in academy that I was like, I'll just stay in school and, you know, drop the rest of it because it was such a good opportunity to hear that.
Speaker 0 00:03:52 Yeah. Yeah. Very cool. So you obviously have a passion for this. Yeah. You like it a lot. You've been doing it for so many years. Do you have any kind of thought process on what you'd like to do with it after school?
Speaker 2 00:04:04 Yeah, so, um, I am looking into the medical field. That's something I've wanted to do for a long time. So, um, but I definitely don't want dance to go away, whether that's taking adult classes or, you know, coming back to the school and helping out here or whatever. Um, yeah, but dance is not going to go away.
Speaker 0 00:04:22 Okay. That's very cool. So, um, when it comes to dance outside of just the performances that you've done here at the school, which I hear you guys do one, maybe two a year. Is there anything else that you've participated in, in town with?
Speaker 2 00:04:35 Um, well, I did participate. We had, um, shows when I was doing out of school dance too. So when I was in here and out of school, I was doing like four productions a year for a year. Yeah. So
Speaker 0 00:04:48 Yeah. That's a lot. You were busy. Yeah. You were very busy. Yeah. So if there's some younger viewers at home watching this, like, and they want to get involved and coming to the school or in dance in general, what would be some advice that you would give them?
Speaker 2 00:05:01 Just don't be scared. Like obviously coming in grade seven, it's very intimidating, you know? Cause we have the grade twelves who, you know, are, have been in dance since grade seven. Um, just don't be scared, just like go for it, you know? Yeah.
Speaker 0 00:05:14 Now when it comes to dance, what kind of dance do you prefer doing? Because there's so many different options.
Speaker 2 00:05:19 I love hip hop. That's what I started doing. That was my first class when I was eight years old. So I've just always loved hip hop, but um, I'm definitely more of an upbeat person. So jazz and tap and hip hop are definitely my favorites
Speaker 0 00:05:33 Tap hip-hop my little sister is a tap teacher. Oh yeah. Yeah. So it's something that my dad got very upset with her one summer. She decided she was in university and she didn't want to come back to Fort McMurray to work out at site. And that's what you do when back in the day, because it paid a lot of money and he could pay tuition. What she decided to do was get a government grant down in south America and she taught tap dancing in south America for the summer instead of coming here to work and made the exact same amount of money. And so she drove my dad a little bit nuts that his little daughter was like down in south America, but nonetheless like, yeah, tap dancing, all kinds of dancing. There's so many career options that I feel unfortunately, prior to systems like this that you didn't really hear about. Um, you really had to like go out of your own. So this is a great program. So you're aware of some of those options. Now when it comes to hip hop, who's your artist? I'm old. So I might not know them. I'm old school, hip hop, but who, uh, who do you like listening to?
Speaker 2 00:06:32 Um, I like Drake and I actually listened to every kind of hip hop. So it's not really a specific one, but I have done research on hip hop. So like I know DJ Kool Herc and like all those.
Speaker 0 00:06:45 Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Now when it comes to like, so I, I just danced to hip hop music. I like, there was no such thing as a course before and like my little brother used to break dance and there wasn't a course. You just did it period. So when you are learning and like you just said researching, like what does that even look like? Like there's a break dancing movie from back in the eighties. I forget what it's called. Um, but that was the closest thing to like any research you could have potentially done. So what, how would you do research on this? Yeah,
Speaker 2 00:07:14 So I mean, obviously Google is a good source. Yeah. There's lots of videos of people like performing the old school hip hop that you know, was started in like the 1970s. Yeah. Yeah. So there's a lot of videos where people teach you how to do it or they're just talking about it. Um, and lots of stuff like that.
Speaker 0 00:07:31 Okay. Interesting. Yeah, definitely. When I was coming up in it, that was not an option. So getting tapes was hard enough magazines, even like, I know I used to like skateboard a little bit. So you'd like, look at a skateboarding magazine, you'd say like, okay, I can kind of see the mechanics of that trick, but hip hop magazines, like the source and all the other ones like that. And five, they were hard to come by. So yeah, I guess the internet would make your life a whole lot easier. A whole lot easier to do the research on it. Yeah. Very cool. All right. Well, listen, we're at the end of the show, but at the end of the show, we have a segment, uh, where people get to do a shameless shout out or plug. So the camera's on you, the lights are on, you have fun. Perfect.
Speaker 2 00:08:12 Um, well we do have a show coming up in Christmas, the Christmas season. Um, you guys should go check it out. Um, it's in December and we'll be doing a mini production to Cinderella I'm in it. Um, so you guys should definitely check it out.
Speaker 0 00:08:25 Okay. Well, I'm going to extend the show. What part are you playing in
Speaker 2 00:08:28 Cinderella? I am Cinderella's best friend.
Speaker 0 00:08:31 Okay. I did not know Cinderella had a best friend of from the mice. So this is not exactly the Disney version then.
Speaker 2 00:08:38 No, we're a little bit different, but still the same idea. Okay,
Speaker 0 00:08:42 Cool. Well, people can check that out on the Facebook site for holy Trinity and or potentially the website. Yep. Awesome. Well, thank you very much for meeting yesterday. You brave, you killed it. You did a great job. Thank you. All right. Well, everybody at home, Fort wood, Buffalo, and the rest of the world. Thank you very much for tuning it to the Mac city morning show. Do appreciate it. Uh, hopefully you're having a great day and we'll see you tomorrow. Peace.
Speaker 1 00:09:22 Talk about quenching your ugly thirsty.
