Episode Transcript
Speaker 0 00:00:00 Good morning, Fort McMurray, wood, Buffalo, and the rest of the world. You've tuned into the Mac city morning show. I am your host, Elliot Pierre. And as for usual, we're going to start this episode off the same way we start everyone off with a moment of gratitude. I know you could be doing a million other things with your time. So the fact that you spend it with us truly does mean the world to me. So thank you on that note, Tanner hit him with the intro.
Speaker 0 00:00:30 Okay. And we are back, as you can tell, I am not on the side of the Mac city morning show. I've been invited to holy Trinity high school. So thank you very much for the invite. I really do appreciate it. Um, one thing that's not changing is how I introduce my guests cause, uh, I don't do that because they can do a better job than myself. So on that note, can you please tell everybody at home who you are and what your
Speaker 2 00:00:49 Ah, hi, I'm Haley Harvey. I'm a grade 11 student here at holy Trinity and I'm also a,
Speaker 0 00:00:55 Okay, cool. Now, before we talk about you Haley and, uh, your dancing, I got to give a big shout out to your sneakers there. Thank you. Converse your brand. Is that the only pair you have or I
Speaker 2 00:01:05 Have, I'm actually a bit of a vans
Speaker 0 00:01:07 Person. Okay. I was just going to ask that. Okay.
Speaker 2 00:01:09 Yeah, I really enjoy skate shoes. I enjoy skating also. Not very good at it, but I try my hardest. Okay. Yeah. So I have like, I think four pairs of Congress and like 11 pairs of vans.
Speaker 0 00:01:22 Yeah. I have a ridiculous amount of aunts. I have a pair of chucks similar to those, but they're all black. Um, I find them good for winter, but yeah, the amount of vans I have, like, yeah, that's what I normally wear on the show. You should usually wear a checkered pair of vans. So yeah. Vans are sweet. Now you're saying you skateboard as an old man. I do a little bit of skateboard and myself, but I do cruising now. I have like a, a cruising board, not so much a longboard, but cruiser because I can't afford to do kickflips and bus on my ankles. So what kind of skateboarding?
Speaker 2 00:01:49 I have a long board and then nickel board. So kind of the, well, I mean the Nicole's like a bit smaller, but I have like a really like obnoxiously, large longboard.
Speaker 0 00:01:59 Okay. Yeah. So what's the difference between like a nickel board and a penny board?
Speaker 2 00:02:03 A and board is a bit longer, a little bit
Speaker 0 00:02:06 Fatter. Okay. Yeah. Okay. Yeah, because penny boards are like, I have one too. It's a death trap. It's like so small to get your feet on it. It's like ridiculous. I just bought this new cruiser. It has like longboard wheels and trucks, but it's like, it's a skateboard kind of, and it's like, it's called a tugboat and it's way smaller because yeah, I love longboarding. But like you said,
Speaker 2 00:02:27 Yeah, it's really hard to turn on to and the sidewalks with like the,
Speaker 0 00:02:32 Yeah. Does it do well? No. Okay. How long have you been skateboarding for? I picked
Speaker 2 00:02:37 Sit up like over quarantine because it is, I mean, I just recently got my driver's license, so if I wanted to go somewhere, it was like, the buses were shut down. So I was like, ah, I need to go. And it's gross. I don't like biking. So I guess I'll just figure out how to do that. So I don't really like do tricks or anything. I kind of just use it as a mode of transportation.
Speaker 0 00:02:56 That's awesome. Very cool. Look at that. So there was a benefit to quarantine. That's great. Now, when I used to skateboard, it was like a group activity in regards. So I got involved because my friends were skateboarding, so you're like, wow, my friends are doing it. I'll do it too. Is this something that you've been able to influence your friends to pick up?
Speaker 2 00:03:15 Um, like the first time I was ever on something, it was a penny board and it was my friend's and she taught me in the girl's locker room. She opened all the lockers and I pushed myself by closing. Yeah. So, um, she was like the person who was like do this and I was like, okay, cool. Yeah.
Speaker 0 00:03:34 Okay. Now, as far as Trinity, how long have you been going to this
Speaker 2 00:03:37 Thing? Going here? Since seventh grade.
Speaker 0 00:03:40 Oh, wow. Okay. Are you from Fort McMurray for somewhere else? Okay. So what elementary school did you go to prior to
Speaker 2 00:03:46 Sister Mary.
Speaker 0 00:03:47 Oh, nice. I also went to sister Mary Phillips. Yes I did. That's a great school. Okay. So when you were deciding to transition from sister Mary Phillips to, um, uh, junior high cause that's great. Seven, right? Yeah. Uh, what was it about holy Trinity that kind of made you want to come here?
Speaker 2 00:04:04 My oldest sister was here, so it was kind of like go.
Speaker 0 00:04:08 Right, right. Okay. And how have you liked your experience here?
Speaker 2 00:04:11 Really good. They're really, every, all the teachers are like super nice and stuff. So yeah.
Speaker 0 00:04:16 So now you're in the dance program currently. Is that something that you joined in grade seven or did you come across it later in your years?
Speaker 2 00:04:24 I started in grade seven.
Speaker 0 00:04:25 Okay. And what type of dance have you gravitated to?
Speaker 2 00:04:29 I'm a bit of a bonehead, so I really liked ballet. Which in the head?
Speaker 0 00:04:32 Yeah. Okay. Keep going, elaborate.
Speaker 2 00:04:36 Uh, so you know, you have to wear a button for ballet, so it's just like a term. If you like ballet, you're kind of like a bun head.
Speaker 0 00:04:43 Okay. I have never heard that term before a bonehead is ballet. Okay. What are the other terms for some other genres of dance? You don't know? That's the one. Okay, so you're into ballet then? Yeah. How's that going for your feet? Terrible. Yeah.
Speaker 2 00:05:01 I'm on this side. It's like, he likes to go underneath the rest of my foot, like point shoes. I've been trying to do point recently.
Speaker 0 00:05:11 Yeah. Oh wow. And so you're in grade 11, you said, right? Yeah. And so after school, cause you only have what? Like a year and a half left. Yeah. Give or take scary. Um, is dance something you're going to try to pursue afterwards or is it something that you've just really enjoyed in the high school
Speaker 2 00:05:29 Pens? Cause I have like two paths in my mind of what I want to do. And one of them is like education. Okay. So if I do become a teacher, I'm kinda like maybe I should like major in teaching in minor in dance and try and stick those together somewhere.
Speaker 0 00:05:43 Yeah. Cool. So teaching is what you want to do after graduation. As of right now, you still have a year and a half. Yeah, that's done. Yeah. Lots of time. Lots of time. Like, Hey, listen to the fact that you have any idea of a direction that you want to go in. And grade 11 is phenomenal because I can assure you when I finished high school, I had no idea what I wanted to do. So some kind of idea is actually a good, good one. So since you've been dancing here, uh, at Trinity performance space, how many different performances have you been in? Is there anything that potentially like, I've seen you in Toronto?
Speaker 2 00:06:19 I've been in all of the productions since the beginning of seventh grade. So that would be like 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. So this one coming up will be my eighth production with Trinity. And then I've been graced with opportunities from the community, especially with Ms. Heather. Um, so recently I was in the, um, showcase with Buffalo put on for the performing arts. Okay. Tap dance solo.
Speaker 0 00:06:43 Nice. Yeah. So although you are a bun head, you also do other forms of dancing as well.
Speaker 2 00:06:50 My
Speaker 0 00:06:50 Favorite. Okay. What other genres are you dancing? It?
Speaker 2 00:06:53 Uh, so here I get taught everything, but um, like last year after school I taught a tap class. Um, so I really also really like tap dance. Um, that was what I first started doing, like to get me into dance. So I did that like before I even came to Trinity, I did the tap dance class.
Speaker 0 00:07:10 Okay. When it comes to tapping, do you have like a piece of board at home that you practice? You're like driving the parents.
Speaker 2 00:07:17 I stole it from my dad. He's he likes to build things and I was like, this is mine. Yeah. And I have two pieces, duct tape together.
Speaker 0 00:07:26 Okay. Whatever works. Yeah. So when it comes to preparing for one of your recital, like what is the thought process in regards to, I know you have an opportunity to practice here in this awesome facility, but outside of school, how, how do you not only physically get prepared, but mentally got prepared for your performances.
Speaker 2 00:07:44 So there's always like, uh, like one day before the show, it's usually during like recital week, all of the girls get together and we kind of just like, we'll sit in a circle and we'll be like a massage of the circle and stuff. And we'll just like talk we used to do, like, we call it like a tea circle and we were just talking about all of our problems. Like guess what? Yeah. And it was like really helpful. And it was like, calm down all your nerves. And like in the wings before the show, we do like the, we copied the dance mom, same like the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.
Speaker 0 00:08:13 Right, right. Yeah. It makes a difference. Yeah. Because like you're performing, like there's people watching, like the nerves component is huge. It's no different from somebody who's playing sports that has to shoot a basketball in front of like a few hundred people like you guys. And like, I've never understood how any dancer does it in regards to, if you're dancing independently, I understand that. But when you have to get the choreography for everybody moving at the same time, I honestly don't know how you do it.
Speaker 2 00:08:44 It's it's really couple of minutes.
Speaker 0 00:08:46 Right. So in regards to some of these performances, like what are the numbers of, um, different members that you have that you're trying to coordinate and court move around?
Speaker 2 00:08:57 So I think like the smallest one I've ever done was by myself, but I've also done a trio. And then the biggest one, I would say there's probably like close to 30 of us. It was for like a, like a Annie musical theater piece. We're all like dancing together. Yeah.
Speaker 0 00:09:16 Okay. Now, if I was a young ad, you wouldn't be an adult. If I was a child who was thinking about coming to this school, like what recommendations would you give them?
Speaker 2 00:09:26 Um, you know, like explore, there's a lot of things that are like, you can do, like a lot of people are like dance now, but then they're like, wait, there's a hip hop. And you're like, yeah, there's a hip hop. So there's a dance exploration class. And that one's like really helpful because you get to taste everything. So it's like, okay, I like this, but I don't like that. So maybe academy is not for me, but groups and beaches, you know,
Speaker 0 00:09:51 That's right. Okay. Now in regards to Trinity, because, uh, we have an ongoing, I don't want to call it a war, but a little battle about which high school is the best. Um, Tanner went to composite, I went to father Merck. Um, you obviously go to Trinity. Um, what is it about Trinity that makes it better than the other high schools in town? Uh,
Speaker 2 00:10:11 Um, I mean, we have a pretty great football team and lots of academies and we have, no, we don't have a shelter
Speaker 0 00:10:22 Class though. No, that's a, that's a father Merck. That's a competent yeah. Sells that shop.
Speaker 2 00:10:28 We are the school of performing arts. Yeah. Yeah. So our theater. Yeah. Like I I've been to America and I've seen complicit and McTavish, and they don't really have a theater. They all have a stage, but they don't have a designated theaters. I think that we have the opportunity to have such a place with a great lighting and seats. And like, I think that's like,
Speaker 0 00:10:52 That's the upper edge. Yeah. This theater is amazing. And your sports facilities here are something that are out of this
Speaker 2 00:10:58 World. Yeah. It's nuts.
Speaker 0 00:11:00 It's nuts. All right. Well, listen, that's the end of the show. Thank you very much. You did a great job now, before I cut you loose. So everybody gets a shameless shout out and or plug. So the lights are on you. The camera's on you have fun.
Speaker 2 00:11:13 Uh, coming up in December, we have our festival of arts program and we are doing a production and we are also doing a Cinderella piece at the end of it. So yeah,
Speaker 0 00:11:23 There we go. Okay. This happened last time too. What are you playing in the play
Speaker 2 00:11:29 Of Cinderella? Evil stepmother.
Speaker 0 00:11:32 Whoa, that's a big role. Congratulations. That's a big one. That's like a crucial part in that story. Okay. I can't wait to come and see it. Awesome. Well, thank you very much for your time today. Appreciate it, everybody at home, Fort McMurray, wood, Buffalo. Thank you for tuning in. Really do appreciate that as well. I've been your host Elliot here. This is another episode of the Mac city morning show completed. Hopefully you're having a great day and we'll see you tomorrow. Peace
Speaker 3 00:11:59 And Dalio Wade. And another morning show later by us.
Speaker 1 00:12:07 You talk about quenching your ugly thirsty.
