Episode Transcript
Speaker 0 00:00:01 Good morning, Fort McMurray, wood, Buffalo, and the rest of the world. You've tuned into the Mac CD morning show. I'm your host, Elliot Pierre. And we're going to start this episode off the same way we start every episode off with a moment of gratitude. I know you could be doing a million things with your time. So the fact that you spend it with us truly does mean the world to me. So thank you on that note, Tanner hit him with the intro.
Speaker 1 00:00:20 Oh, she caught me loves you're listening to the next any morning show.
Speaker 0 00:00:29 All right. And we're back. I'm excited about today's episode. Uh, we have returning guests, but there's so many things we didn't talk about last time that I can't wait to ask them this time. So as you guys know, I don't introduce my guests because they can do a better job at that than myself. So on that note, sir, can you please tell everybody who you are and what you're about
Speaker 3 00:00:46 Elliot? Thanks for having me back. Kyle Warren, here I am a local, uh, Rotarian I'm with the rotary club, Fort McMurray oil sands. I'm also running the wood Buffalo disc golf association for the disc golfers in town here. And I'm a skydiver and that you guys wanted to quiz me on some of that stuff. Sounds like you want to jump out of a plane and one of these days
Speaker 4 00:01:14 We're to, we're going to get him on one day.
Speaker 3 00:01:17 Yeah. And just a local guy that likes to, to help out around the community with the rotary club. Cool. Yeah.
Speaker 0 00:01:25 All right. Well, before I get into my selfish questions, um, what's going on? What do you want to talk about first and foremost in regards to the rotary club or disc golf? Like what's going on? Yeah.
Speaker 3 00:01:34 So, uh, let's start out with a rotary club. We got the real rock film festival. I finally get to host again. I'm really excited about that. Uh, so that's, uh, kind of piggybacking off of bam film festival. It's the same kind of idea. So you go into that this Friday as well, a little plug for them. Well,
Speaker 0 00:01:51 Well, let's double back on that. Okay. So what's real, it's happening this Friday?
Speaker 3 00:01:56 No, that's spent film festival is Friday, Saturday this week and I'm going to be given out. Yeah, yeah. Decky I know virtually you're there. Nope. We're there. They're doing half capacity seating still. There's a little reception this Friday. I'll get to go to. Yep. And there'll be given out to tickets to real rock film festival each night. So you can win a pair of tickets if you, if you show it or
Speaker 0 00:02:20 Tickets still on sale,
Speaker 3 00:02:22 I believe so. Yep. Yep. Uh, the Friday may have filled up, but I believe Saturday should still be available because
Speaker 0 00:02:30 Yeah. Tanner man, when we're done filming like cattle college, right? Yep. Um, we need to get, I'm going to take us right away Saturday. Okay. I did not know that. I thought it was virtual again because my mom hit me up a few weeks ago and wanted to get like the virtual and watch it. Right. Um, yeah. And like I said, yeah, sure. Mom, if you want to get it, cause I wasn't sure it was coming to town,
Speaker 3 00:02:51 Right? Yeah. Last year. Cause we're, uh, like a donor towards them. They just had us guys show up and I had a little thing for us and they're very limited capacity, but try and get in.
Speaker 0 00:03:02 They had one just a few months back. Like I can't, I don't want to say it was full capacity. I don't know what to pass. He, wasn't not trying to get anybody in trouble, but he was awesome to go see it. And I thought they were just doing it early just in case. Yeah.
Speaker 3 00:03:16 Right. Okay.
Speaker 0 00:03:18 So that's this Friday. So I gotta get the
Speaker 3 00:03:19 Ticket for that. It goes down. Yeah.
Speaker 0 00:03:22 And so what's your thing like, cause I know that radical reels,
Speaker 3 00:03:26 Right? Yeah. That's similar to that. So it's mostly like climbing. Um, well that's all climbing related climbing stuff. Yeah. Some like albinism and um, sport climbing and bouldering and all that, the top climbers in the world, you get to kind of see what's happened over the last year. Nice. Very cool. Yeah. I'm a,
Speaker 0 00:03:43 I have to imagine all these guys who are doing extreme sports during COVID probably accelerated their training and what they were doing. Right.
Speaker 3 00:03:51 Yeah. So it'll be very exciting to see you drain individually, right? Yep. That's exactly it. You'll sports. Yep. For sure. So thank you for that. So what does that happen? That is April 9th. Okay.
Speaker 0 00:04:03 And come back on before this so we can pump that up. Yep.
Speaker 3 00:04:06 Yeah. We're still looking for your local sponsors. If anyone wants to throw in for raffles and uh, or donate some, some kind of items and our cash will, we'll definitely accept it. Okay. And uh, yeah, so that's um, rotary club of Fort McMurray oil sands on Facebook. You can follow us there. And uh, what else are we doing? We're working with the SPCA for pedals, for paws. Um, my, uh, my buddy Terasa and I are the mechanics. We, we, uh, fixed up, uh, 80 bikes last year and sold the, so it was quite a successful event. And I think it's reached out to the public quite a bit because we have quite the stockpile of bikes that are built up at SPCA for donations. So we fix up bikes there. And then we, uh, as, as rotary club, we like to be humanitarians and we ended up giving away a few kids' bikes and we're looking to, to get some more, some more kids bikes fixed up in and given away. So very cool SPCA has been really good to partner with on that project. And I think we've helped make it a quick successful.
Speaker 0 00:05:07 Yeah. What about disc golf? What's happening here for this outcome? I have to assume you don't do it in the winter.
Speaker 3 00:05:13 Uh, we do. I was actually playing last night. It's really fun in lion's park. Cause like all the lights are set up. It's all Christmas Eve and a winter Wonderland out there. So it's pretty fun, man. That snow is deep as heck. Right. So we have to put like a three or four inch ribbon, like a Christmas like insulin kind of thing on your desk. So when it goes in the snowbank, you can see something sticking out my buddies last two days last night. Okay. Yeah. So we were pretty committed. It's usually only four or five of us. So you can see if you see someone disc golfing in the winters and uh, and then we're working with yanno college at these injured sport and wellness. We have Monday nights from eight to 10:00 PM. The public can come up just $5 drop-in and we got ahold of soccer pitch there inside and get around and they bought a bunch of, uh, like the canvas baskets.
Speaker 3 00:06:01 So we have like a little short course laid out. There's like four different games. You can play kind of like horse. So you got to like copy what the other guy is, trick shot or something like that. And 21 is kind of like horse shoes, you play back and forth and um, and yeah, then like short course in some putting practice. Very cool. Pretty cool. Yet you can, uh, you can pop in five bucks into our club and we'll track all your scores and stuff for you and you can win prizes when the disk each day the, the overall winner and yeah. Pretty cool. Super fun.
Speaker 0 00:06:30 So when you're playing outside in the winter, like the air is different. Yeah.
Speaker 3 00:06:35 It's frustrating. It's your distance is taken away so much. Cause it's yeah. Dense cold air and you got a ribbon and whatever else you're trying to do, John do it. It's to slow it down. So yeah. It's pretty frustrating. You like rip a really good drive. You think it's flying forever, especially at night, your depth perception is all messed up. You're like way over here. And you're always like 50 feet back from where you thought it was.
Speaker 0 00:06:58 That's interesting. Yeah. So like I lion's park. I know they they're doing tons of cool stuff down there. You have like the skating and everything else. But I used to go snowshoeing there because the snow is deep there because not all of it is touched. So are you guys in snowshoes playing or are you just
Speaker 3 00:07:15 I'm wearing my, a snowboard boots, but a lot of guys will wear like a, a Baffin mood or something and snow pants because yeah, last night it was some spots is like above your knees, like where it drifts over. So it says it's exhausting. Yeah, of course. Once you start looking around for a disc and you're tricking around through this deep stuff, like
Speaker 0 00:07:36 Awesome. Well for the love of the game, right? Yep. Exactly. Okay. Now before I get to be selfish with my questions here, so you got your plugs out. That's great. Thank you for telling me about the bad film festival. I did not know I'm going to get my tickets literally, as soon as we're done filming. Good. Um, let's talk about skydiving. Yeah, I don't skydive. I have no intent need. And-or wanders pushing you Tanner, I guess has done at a once or twice. Um, I know we talked about it a little bit before, but like you're in, you're into this. This is a thing. And for you, so explain why I know what skydiving is, but
Speaker 3 00:08:14 I consider myself recreational, even though I have like 400 and some jumps, but uh, like last year I didn't get any and I had the baby and that was sponsored by a disc golf company and I was kind of focusing on that, but right. Um, yeah, I've had years where I've had over a hundred jumps, so yeah, there was a quarter of my jumps pretty much in one year, so yeah. Uh, uh, still, still involved with it, but uh, yeah, no, I know, uh, quite a bit about it. We've been over 10 years now. I just got my 10 year pin in the CSBA that Canadian sport parachute association or a couple of years ago. So yeah, lemme, I'm pretty into that. I'm a, I do, what's called free flying is my discipline of choice. There's tons of different discipline. So like you guys were, we were talking about wingsuit and, and stuff. That's what most people think of. And then other they'll call it a squirrel suit, which is that's the brand of .
Speaker 3 00:09:06 Okay. Just like this Gulf there isn't it it's like Kleenex. Kleenex. Yeah, exactly. That's good marketing when that happens. Yeah. Yeah. So I've done that once. I just checked it out, we kind of made out of a plane. So when people think of wing suiting, they picture like cruising down a mountain. So that's so many levels of disciplines mixed together. Right? So base jumping is one thing which I haven't done, um, thought about it, but now I've got a kid and I might maybe might do. Uh, so base stands for bridge antenna span, earth span is, is, uh, or sorry, building, building in tennis banners. So span is a bridge and that's the safest way to do it. You, when you first start learning, you jumped off the bridge and uh, cause then if you have a 180 line twist, you don't fly into a mountain.
Speaker 3 00:09:54 That's right. That's exactly it. Yeah. Open bridge to, to fly under that's right. Yeah. So that's the wing suiting is one thing you learn how to do that. After 200 jumps, when I hit my 200, I did my wingsuit course. And uh, and then you do that of a plane. You figured out how to maneuver around clouds. And if you're good at base jumping, you can take combining them together. Typically you want to learn how to track really well first. So that's just like in a regular skydiving seat, mine's like kind of form fitting for free flying. I go really fast vertically basically. And so you learn how to track. You pull your arms in, you can go sideways. Basically. You need to know that's like a basic thing so that you can separate from each other when you're, before you open your parachutes. Right?
Speaker 3 00:10:35 So then you can start learning how to angle, track, where you're coming faster at an angle and then kind of develops into what I do, which is a free flying. So sit flying like this and everybody's there. You can use it in the bar. I'm always describing this again, like this and pretend your buddy smells funny. You want to take a doc? Cause you have to balance with your head. Everything's backwards. Right? If you fall on your back is kind of the safety position. You have to do like a spread Jesus kind of thing. Cause it's not. If you do a sit up, it's exactly opposite. You just fly backwards. Right? Interesting. Yeah. So it's learning how to walk in three dimensions and, and I've started getting into head down. So you're upside down and you, uh, there's like Daffy where your feet are like this or sorry, Daffy and shelf like that.
Speaker 3 00:11:23 And so there's all different kinds of body variations and be in this close in a free fly. Like it takes quite a while to get to that a successful jump. When you just, you get that close and you grab your buddy shoe or something. So that's nuts because you're, you're going at like speeds around 300 kilometers an hour when you're pinned and like a head down or especially like higher altitude, like we were talking halo jumps is thinner. The higher you go. So you can go faster. Right. If you're like holding onto each other. Yeah. You're yeah. You're going, you're cruising pretty fast here. Meet missile. Yeah. Vehicle.
Speaker 0 00:11:57 And if you bumped each other's head, knock each other out at that altitude.
Speaker 3 00:12:01 Yeah. There's a lot of space up there. It's pretty rare that you can collide it. don't do that missile. That's put into somebody. Yeah.
Speaker 0 00:12:14 It's one of those activities we were talking before we started filming. Like I remember first being introduced to like seeing it on television anyways. Yeah. Was X games, right? When do you start?
Speaker 3 00:12:26 Competition is doing the colorful suits. Your legs.
Speaker 0 00:12:31 It was wild because when you think of jumping out of plane, like traditionally, like the guy jumps out of a plane, he falls for a little bit, pulls his parachute and then away you go and now like you said, there's so many different disciplines where you're just like,
Speaker 3 00:12:47 I got to do sweeping. Those are the guys with like a tea towel canopy over their heads, like super tiny. And they're cruising a hundred kilometers an hour and getting their food across the pond and crashing into the PEs and their hips all the time. Yeah. It's crazy. Yeah. So that's yeah. Yeah. That's a, that's a crazy discipline. It's a,
Speaker 0 00:13:07 It's a thing to like, it's a
Speaker 3 00:13:09 Cool thing. Yeah, man. It's super fun.
Speaker 0 00:13:11 It's I like once again, really good.
Speaker 3 00:13:14 Lots of crazy people find a party with,
Speaker 0 00:13:16 I have no intention need or want to do it, but I can appreciate it. Right.
Speaker 3 00:13:20 I'll be your camera, man. If you build up the guts, you have no intention need nor wants. Doesn't mean it won't happen.
Speaker 0 00:13:29 Like I never, and it's so cliche. Like you never say never, you never know what kind of situation
Speaker 3 00:13:33 We can do a fundraiser to get Elliot plane or something.
Speaker 0 00:13:37 Yeah. Asked me a few weeks ago. Like if I would shave my beard for a fundraiser, there you go. Yeah. And I was just like, uh, you'd have to raise a lot of money at this point. Like for years I was clean shaven. I like how I look without my beard. I'm fine with it. But I'm just like, I don't want to shave it. There was one time back in the day. I think I told the story on the show once or twice I dressed up his buddy, the elf. Oh really? And I was working at accurate early and I said, listen, I'm going to dress up like buddy yell for a day. Yeah. If you guys can raise a thousand bucks. Nice.
Speaker 3 00:14:13 And they're just like, yeah. Okay. Just randomly, like not around Christmas.
Speaker 0 00:14:16 Oh, is that Christmas time? Was that Christmas? And it was for SANAS anonymous. Right. And so anyways, I just said, I sent out like a company email, Hey, listen, this is what I'm trying to do. It's for sound it's anonymous. And then one of the plant sites, a Syncrude started, it was like, is it a thousand dollars? Like to come out to the plant site? And I was like, no, it was just one day. I'll just dress up as buddy. If the company can raise a grant and they're like, yeah, but if we raise a grand, will you come out to site? And I was just like, yeah, I guess so. Anyways, all of the different plant sites and like a bunch of different offices, all raise a thousand bucks raised like five grand. Oh, you have to wear this stupid outfit five days in a row. As far at that point I decided like, yeah, if I'm going to do like a fundraiser, I'm going to set a and like effort. I don't really want to do the challenge. Yes. Got it. You to set that bar pretty high. So for me to jump out of the plane, a bar would be set pretty high.
Speaker 5 00:15:15 So I also know that you are a opportunistic person. And so like all of this convincing and fundraising doesn't need to happen. If you can just pin the right moment to introduce it and be like, this is what's happening. So like you just got to find the right moment. I'm going to get you to get out of a plane. So here we go. Well, your fault for employing me.
Speaker 0 00:15:39 Well, you were just saying like earlier, like you have a child, right? Yeah. And it's one of those things where I'm literally afraid of everything. Yeah. Like I I'm just afraid. Yeah. But um, now that I have a kid, I don't want to put my fears on him. Um, yeah. So since he's in,
Speaker 5 00:15:56 Okay, I'll bring it up to your kid there. I'll just be like, Hey, you got to convince your dad to go skydiving because then what are you going to do?
Speaker 0 00:16:03 Yeah. It was going to do it like to the point, like if, to get me to do anything, if Keegan wouldn't want to do something that makes me happy to do it. So
Speaker 5 00:16:14 I got to convince your kid. He goes,
Speaker 0 00:16:17 He goes older. Yeah. But like, I don't like trenchless. Right. I had some experiences with them in south America when I was a kid. I don't like for Angeles. Yeah. I think that's a legitimate like, Hey, I don't, I'm not afraid of spiders. I just don't like trash lists. Yeah. And I remember before COVID they had the reptiles zoo came to Fort McMurray. Oh yeah. And my kid was like two or three loving it. And he was like, fearless. He's like, I want to touch a snake. I want him to snap. He's like, dad, come with me.
Speaker 3 00:16:51 Yeah. Be brave. In front of the kid.
Speaker 0 00:16:53 I had a snake wrapped around me. I swore like, kind of like skydiving. I'm like, I'm never, I have no need and or want, well, my dad's when my kid was just like, Hey dad,
Speaker 3 00:17:03 Around your neck, just pounding.
Speaker 0 00:17:05 Yep. Put a snake around the neck. And then he's like, Hey dad, let the trach crawl on your hand. I'm like a trench call on your hand. Like there are certain things that make you kind of, I don't know if it's PC, but like man up basically. And it's my kid. I got man up. So I don't want to instill my fear on him. Yep. Fair enough. Now Tanner hit me up with the signal that he has his questions ready. So you've been here before, you know all about the max minute. Yep. Please me hit him up with the maximum.
Speaker 5 00:17:30 Alrighty. Question number one for you today. What is your favorite part of getting to host the events you do?
Speaker 3 00:17:38 Oh man, it's fun to have like, uh, just kind of educating people in like climbing and the real rock, film festivals and uh, boasting a bunch of local companies and uh, in the area here and giving out a bunch of prizes to people that show up.
Speaker 5 00:17:53 Cool. Question number two. What is one story from your time helping animals that stands out to you?
Speaker 3 00:18:01 Um, so with, uh, like the SPCA is that you're referring to. Yep. We, uh, uh, yeah, I'm just really proud about the, the pedals for positive event. Um, uh, everyone should come in, uh, get a, a bike from us in, uh, uh, get, uh, a way cheaper deal on some gyms show up. Man. We had, uh, last year, like $4,000 bike. They're pretty cool. And then, yeah. Then the other thing is you get to play with puppies and stuff. When we're over there tuning up bikes,
Speaker 5 00:18:29 Question number three. What is your, what is the biggest challenge of winter disc golfing?
Speaker 3 00:18:36 The cold in there? It's like I say, it's frustrating to the dance air gets takes away from your drive. So, uh, there's that, and then it's exhausting when you have as much snow as we do right now, looking at a winter Wonderland out there. So it's uh, yeah, it's pretty tiring stepping around in deep snow, looking for disks.
Speaker 5 00:18:56 Number four. What is the event who you're most excited to attend this year?
Speaker 3 00:19:02 Uh, bam film festival this weekend. That's that's super cool, man. I look forward to that every year. I'm on a sitter off, puts on a really great event, uh, with the library there and I am excited to be a part of it.
Speaker 5 00:19:16 And your final question, what is one extreme sport? You want to try that you haven't yet?
Speaker 3 00:19:24 And it's pretty tricky, man. I've done quite a few. I would say maybe paragliding. I'd like to get into bigger canopy that a little bit more calm, slower, and just, or you can go to get pulled up to speed flying where it's a smaller canopy and cruising down the mountain. So yeah, that'd be fun. I
Speaker 5 00:19:41 Felt a little bit. Those have been your five
Speaker 3 00:19:43 Question things lab ready? Extreme. Yeah, man. Have you bungee jumped? I have, yes. I've checked that off in a Whistler. I did a double Gaynor. Just kept flipping as many times as I can. Yeah. Yeah. The only thing I was going to bring up is that there's a wind tunnel in Calgary now called I fly. Oh, vertical wind tunnel. If you're afraid of Heights, you can totally bang out some practice guide without getting into plane. I've done a
Speaker 0 00:20:10 Wind tunnel in Vegas. It was
Speaker 3 00:20:12 Cool. Yeah. Sweet.
Speaker 5 00:20:14 I imagine that in an airplane it's like gonna be a thousand times cooler.
Speaker 0 00:20:20 I listen, I have no doubt. Doubt is cool.
Speaker 3 00:20:22 Yeah. You can get your kids into it like a sky. I'm obviously going to be pushing it on my kid or whatever you want to do, but I'll be disappointed if you guys go, but like on TV now it's forever on the internet.
Speaker 0 00:20:37 Yeah. The only thing I've ever done, that's like, I would consider like extreme quote unquote and it wasn't, it was such a elect down was
Speaker 3 00:20:45 Um, zip-lining yeah.
Speaker 0 00:20:48 What is this
Speaker 3 00:20:49 Like? Seems cool at first, but then yeah, this is much slower than,
Speaker 5 00:20:54 Or like if you watched the dude who's like instructing you and you're like, you know, team of people doing this and he gets on and he just zips it a hundred miles an hour down that road and you're like, oh, that's awesome. I'm going to do that. Then you're that? And you're the guy who's like stuck in the middle, trying to like shimmy his way over to the side. You're like, how'd you just do a hundred kilometers an
Speaker 3 00:21:15 Hour. Yeah.
Speaker 0 00:21:18 All right, man. On that note, 20 minutes flew. I know we went over 20 minutes, so that's okay. Yeah, we do it all the time here. But at the end of the show, you get to shameless, shout out or plug. So you got the mix, right? The lights, the cameras,
Speaker 3 00:21:28 Like last time I plugged my wife, family shows showed up to my wife again. And uh, yeah, we had a little coming on six months here, you lie. And I said, thank you, Jen. It's got him hanging off here all the time. And then yeah, just, uh, join us on Facebook. Uh, uh, rotary club of Fort McMurray oil sands and what Buffalo disc golf association is or official disc golf page. And then the group is Fort McMurray. Disc golfers. There we go.
Speaker 0 00:21:57 All right, man. Well, thank you for coming. Come back again and again and again, especially leading up to the disc golf season, really kicking off in the summer and this, um, off of the Banfield festival come April. Yeah. Pumped
Speaker 3 00:22:11 That up. April 9th. Yep. Okay, cool.
Speaker 0 00:22:13 All right. Well for McMurry wood, Buffalo in the rest of the world, that's been another episode of the Mac city morning show. Thank you so much for tuning in. It does mean the world to me. I will be having a great day and we'll see you tomorrow. Peace.
Speaker 6 00:22:24 I just dies that desk. Another Mac city morning show Don.
Speaker 7 00:22:41 Talk about quenching your ugly thirst.
