Episode Transcript
Speaker 0 00:00:00 Good morning, Fort McMurray, wood, Buffalo, and the rest of the world. You've tuned in to the maxi morning show. I am your host Elliot pier, and we're going to start the show off the same way we start every episode off with a moment of gratitude. I know you could be doing a million other things with your time, and the fact that you spend time with us truly does mean the world to me. So thank you on that note, Tanner hidden with the interest
Speaker 2 00:00:29 Hey, everybody. He sends in here from there, Alpharetta, uh, just quick chat about, uh, the wonderful community we live in here. As you guys know, we support the El Barron's. We've joined the drive-in movie theater. We're involved in the marathon here in Fort McMurray and make sure we're taking care of the kids and all the local businesses, all the local charities and all the local foundations guys. That's what makes this community such an amazing place to live.
Speaker 0 00:00:55 All right. And we're back big shout out to neuronal Toyota, key fad and Emory and all the boys and girls down at neural for sponsoring the show. Really do appreciate it. Thank you so much. Um, as you can see, we are not at the max city set because the sponsor for today's Mac CD minute is the thick wood barbershop next to the black horse pub. So thanks to Allie and the boys for letting us set up shop today, here at their place. As you also know, I don't introduce my guests. I let them do that themselves because they can do a better job. So on that note, sir, can you please tell everybody at home who you are and what you're about
Speaker 3 00:01:27 L M Maddie Parley. Long-term port McMurry, resident of eight years. Almost. Now I work at way points, uh, community services, uh, run facilities and maintenance for those guys. Nice. And I play occasionally and pubs around town.
Speaker 0 00:01:45 I think that's how I noticed you. Like you look familiar. We've never met before. Like officially, what band do you play
Speaker 3 00:01:50 In? It just means just you early. Yeah.
Speaker 0 00:01:53 Okay. Yeah. And you played at all of the different bars, bars and pubs on
Speaker 3 00:01:58 57 girls?
Speaker 0 00:02:01 Yeah.
Speaker 3 00:02:02 Yeah. Shortchange pretty much all yeah.
Speaker 0 00:02:05 Short chain. Are you new to today? Have you played that short change since it's been shortchanged? Or are you playing there? When is Jaguar lounges?
Speaker 3 00:02:12 Well, no, I'd never played there in his Jaguar just since it's been shortchanged. So I'll be there this week, Saturday night.
Speaker 0 00:02:19 And how are you liking shortchange?
Speaker 3 00:02:23 You get 15 people in there and you feel like a rockstar is nice and nice and intimate and compact. Yeah. I love it. Love it. It's a fun little spot. So
Speaker 0 00:02:31 How did you get into music?
Speaker 3 00:02:33 Yeah, I've been playing since I was 15 years old. I always wanted to play guitar always when I was like little, little kid, I always wanted to be a country singer. I thought. And then my parents bought me a ukulele when I was really young, then that was a ukulele. So I didn't really play it as much. And, uh, yeah, when I think it was, yeah, I was 15. My parents got my first guitar and just taught myself how to play and sing some songs and I started playing. Ma'am
Speaker 0 00:02:59 Very cool. So do you come from a musical background? Like does your dad, your mom, grandfather, anybody playing?
Speaker 3 00:03:05 No one, my old, my older, brother's a, he's a freaking prodigy. He can play anything he's unreal. Um, and, uh, so him and I just jammed and I just kinda, he was the mentor for me and yeah, we just played, played in bands together, growing up and very
Speaker 0 00:03:20 Cool. And where's he, is he in Fort Mac or
Speaker 3 00:03:22 No, Vancouver.
Speaker 0 00:03:23 Okay. Is that where you're from originally?
Speaker 3 00:03:24 Oh, we're east coast and new Brunswick.
Speaker 0 00:03:27 Oh, wow. So you guys both were like, oh,
Speaker 3 00:03:30 Okay,
Speaker 0 00:03:31 Nice. So What hooked you to Fort Mac? Out of all the places in the world?
Speaker 3 00:03:36 That's an insane kind of story, but I, uh, I used to work for churches as a pastor and so a local church moved me out here to take over, uh, or to build kind of a PR program for them. And, uh, yeah, they moved me and my family out here in 2014 and did that for geez, till 2018 and yeah. Then jumped out and now I work with, uh, wait points,
Speaker 0 00:04:02 What church?
Speaker 3 00:04:03 Fort city.
Speaker 0 00:04:04 Hey, we just had the pastor on his episode air two days ago. I'll get out Doug. Great. Just on the show.
Speaker 3 00:04:11 Yeah.
Speaker 0 00:04:12 Very cool. Okay. Very nice. All right. So waypoints,
Speaker 3 00:04:19 Waypoints runs the women's shelter in town.
Speaker 0 00:04:21 That's right. That's up in Timberly
Speaker 3 00:04:23 Stone Creek.
Speaker 0 00:04:24 Thank you. Yeah. So tell me a little, I know about them, but I don't know enough about them. So tell me a little bit about that.
Speaker 3 00:04:30 And they are, so they run basically every kind of emergency social service that you can imagine. So they deal with domestic violence. That's like the big thing that, um, our emergency women's shelter is, you know, it's a steady flow enforced. So the clientele, um, so women and children fleeing domestic violence, uh, a lot of homeless women that just need a safe spot. You know, they can come to the women's shelter and be taken care of. We have a second stage women's shelter. So if, uh, a woman or children are leaving a bad situation and starting their own new direction, they have a good, safe housing in our building next door, the compass. And then from there, man, they have sexual assault, healing centers, so, oh wow. People who've been in victims of sexual assault, counseling services, they have a center or sorry, a child and youth ad because he centers. So kids that have been assaulted, abused, they can be interviewed and a more youth child friendly environment.
Speaker 0 00:05:38 Right, right. Yeah. So for a service like this, I know that there has been in the past, like the dinner theater, I see some of the fundraisers, how can people get involved with helping? Is it all through like cash donations? Is it volunteer work? Like how can people help
Speaker 3 00:05:54 Now in the middle of the pandemic volunteer opportunities are slim to none. Right. It's just easier to, not a lot of our initiatives. So our, uh, the food festival we haven't able to do the last two years or we've had to pare it down so far, that was like a big, a big moneymaker, you know, to help support the things we do. And then the dinner theater as well has, we've been two years and we won't be able to do one this year again, hopefully next year have a return. Um, so yeah, donations online, a big thing that we have been doing is our way points, 50, 50, we've got a draw coming up, I think the 25th of February, but checking on Facebook, all the socials it's on there. And, uh, that's been super helpful. Very cool. Lean times.
Speaker 0 00:06:40 Okay. Now, if there is, uh, it's primarily for women as I think I'm figuring out here. Yeah. If there is somebody out there who needs to utilize any of the number of services that you have, how can they get in contact with you? Is it a phone number? Is it a,
Speaker 3 00:06:53 Yeah, we get a, we've got a crisis line number. You just call, you can find on our website on our Facebook and it's a local number you within, you know, you make one phone call, dial zero, and you're talking with a trained a crisis worker. That'll help direct you where you need to go. Okay.
Speaker 0 00:07:09 Yeah. Very cool. All right, man. I don't know if you've ever seen the show or not before, but he got a sec. Okay, good. So you're aware that we have a second called the CD minute. This is Tanner segment. We've got Tanner on location with this. He's going to ask you some questions. I don't know what he's going to ask you. I wish you nothing but the best of luck Tanner. Didn't went to Maxine a minute.
Speaker 4 00:07:25 All right. We're doing three questions today. So question number one for you is what is your favorite part of playing music for the Fort McMurray crowd?
Speaker 3 00:07:34 Oh man. The diversity of, uh, tastes. You can play anything and you're playing someone's favorite song.
Speaker 4 00:07:43 Uh, what is your favorite change you've seen since you've gotten to Fort McMurray within the community.
Speaker 3 00:07:50 Oh, come on. What is the best thing?
Speaker 0 00:07:56 A head-scratcher
Speaker 3 00:07:57 A damn, yeah. I'm trying to think of anything new. Um, You know what? I'm just going to go super kind of lame. But the RM has been putting in a lot of effort into their winter activities. So, uh, we've got a new skating rink or skate trail down in lion's park. I took my kids there just last week. Super cold Bo hole, man. It's fun going into the woods when the lights are on at night. It's super cool.
Speaker 4 00:08:22 And your final question, why do you like getting your hair cut at Pequot barbershop. Okay.
Speaker 3 00:08:29 I've been coming to these guys since 2015. Everybody's family. These guys treat you like royalty and it's just a fun, relaxed atmosphere. And they do good work, man. I love it. Love
Speaker 4 00:08:40 It. That's been UMAC city minute.
Speaker 0 00:08:42 There you go. Thank you, Tanner. Appreciate it. So now when it comes to music, when you're jamming out at the bars, what kind of music are you playing?
Speaker 3 00:08:49 Oh man. So I'll do van Morrison. I'll do, um, Dave Matthews. I'll do a passenger. What's a nude. Oh my gosh. I can't think of the name. Yeah, the Lumineers. Yeah. A little bit of everything. CCR. I like to go from the sixties all the way up to around the two thousands and a few songs from right now.
Speaker 0 00:09:13 So this has always blown my mind about musicians. Like you don't have any sheet music, you don't have the lyrics in front of you. Don't got a head piece telling you like, Hey, this is the next word.
Speaker 3 00:09:23 So I do. Oh,
Speaker 0 00:09:24 You do. Okay. Thank you. Okay. So I'm just like, how does, how does
Speaker 3 00:09:28 There are some guys here in town that are just encyclopedias? Like max knows where the Dan talk. They, they don't have anything in front of them that they just pick out songs for me guitar. Like I could play anything by year. No problem. But it's the lyrics lyrics I need to have. There's too many songs. So I got to have them in front of me. So I have an iPad and it just tells
Speaker 0 00:09:47 Me
Speaker 3 00:09:48 Good. It's like, it's like karaoke and it's helpful because sometimes it gets songs you're familiar with, but you've never played that people want to hear. And so you just like pull it up and
Speaker 0 00:09:57 Yeah, like I like to spit hot fire, rap lyrics, and then my car. But I, and I know them, but I need that cue to be like, oh, this is the lyric. And then I can keep going. But if you just put on like a Snoop beat, I was like, I don't know where to start with this. Like I need,
Speaker 3 00:10:11 Well, when you're sitting at home by yourself, just you hanging out or singing, whatever alone, no problem at all. But the minute you have people in front of me for me anyway, that's when I started to sing the second verse on the first,
Speaker 0 00:10:23 Ah, there we go. So, cause I know like big time musicians, you see, they got the earpiece and they, so they have some help there. So I'm thinking like if you're doing covers, especially how are these guys remembering? Every single lyric mine belong to me. Yeah. Cool. Well, listen, man. We've come to the end of the show at the end of the show, everybody does a shameless shout out or plug though. So you got the mix, the camera, the lights have fun.
Speaker 3 00:10:45 Oh, come on. Uh, support the waypoints community services. They are doing good work, uh, here in town. And I love being a part of that team. And then y'all come see me live. I'll be at, where am I at at the CMA charity jam tomorrow night, uh, tickets are still on sale check, see MHA or Mike Jones out. And then Saturday night I'm at the shortchange. Come hang out and we will sing all your favorite songs and have a good night.
Speaker 0 00:11:12 There we go. Well, man, thank you very much for being on the show. Appreciate it. We're going to have to get you back when we're on the set and you can keep up pumping Everything that you're up to
Speaker 3 00:11:19 Love to. Cool.
Speaker 0 00:11:20 Well Fort McMurray with Buffalo, the rest of the world. Thank you very much for tuning into the Mac city morning show big shout out to our title sponsor or I'll Toyota. Thank you for making this happen. And another big shout out to Allie and the thick wood barbershop, all the fellows down here for sponsoring the Mac CD minute. I hope everybody's having a great day and we'll see you tomorrow. Peace
Speaker 6 00:11:41 Dalio Wade. And another morning show later by us.
